Mission Statement

Since 1979, Foothills Academy Society has met a growing need for programs and services for individuals with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD. We strive to be a centre of excellence in both our full-time School Program and our Community Services. We work with children, adults, families and professionals in Calgary and beyond. Fundraising activities support our Bursary Fund to ensure that no one is turned away due to financial circumstances.

About This Cause

“You know Mom, I can do anything.” I told him that he could and I cried with happiness because he now saw what we always knew…he’s very smart, but just needed a different kind of teaching and environment to help him learn…In the past, we were told John was a bad boy, we were bad parents, he just needed to sit still and focus, or he wasn’t trying hard enough. John now loves to come to school and he’s still a busy boy and his handwriting is difficult to read, but we know that he now has the chance to become the best possible student and person for him. Our son is feeling accepted and understood and we have seen many positive changes in him." For parents whose child is struggling with learning, it can be difficult to find the right help. Learning disabilities can affect academic skills, social skills, self-confidence and self-esteem. With the right identification and supports, these individuals have unlimited potential. Without the right supports, the outcomes can be grim – school disengagement and drop out, involvement in crime, poverty, addiction and homelessness are just some of the potentially negative outcomes. A School and So Much More! Foothills Academy Society started in 1979 after three years of consultation to meet a unique need in Calgary for children diagnosed with Learning Disabilities. The Society has two mandates: to serve children and youth with Learning Disabilities in a School Program and to serve the greater community through Community Services. Foothills Academy School is a non-profit private school for students with diagnosed Learning Disabilities in grades 3 - 12. The school offers a safe haven to children who have been frustrated by traditional schooling, disheartened by a lack of support for their unique learning style and perhaps been bullied because they just don’t fit in. The mandate of Estelle Siebens Community Services is to assist children, youth, and adults who are experiencing difficulties in their school, work, and/or home environments as a result of Learning Disabilities, ADHD, and associated social-emotional challenges. We offer assistance to these individuals, as well as parents and professionals, through the provision of assessments; social skills programming; counselling services; presentations and workshops; research; recreational programming; as well as intensive remedial instruction for reading, writing, and mathematics. Our goal is to provide quality services within a supportive environment and to advocate in our global community for better understanding, acceptance, and respect for individuals with LD and/or ADHD. It has always been part of Foothills’ philosophy to never turn someone away due to financial circumstances. As a result, close to $1 million must be raised each year to support the bursary program at Foothills. Donations are always welcome to help support the needs of individuals and families affected by Learning Disabilities and ADHD.
