Promoting the independence, health, recovery and community integration of persons with mental health challenges through the provision of case management, supportive housing and a broad range of other programs and services.
About This Cause
Madison Community Services has been operating in Toronto since 1977. Madison was the first non-profit agency in Toronto to create and offer the service models of mental health case management supports and mental health supportive housing. Most of our clients live below the poverty line (living on Ontario Disability Support Program – ODSP) and many were homeless before coming to Madison. During our 40 + years of serving our clients we have worked diligently to identify and fill service gaps in the mental health system. For example, Madison is the only agency which provides mental health case management to the ever growing Hispanic population in Toronto with our team of Spanish speaking case managers. Madison also saw the need to offer both mental health and settlement supports to new immigrants coming from war-torn countries (and/or countries which persecute minorities) such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, and Afghanistan. To address one of the greatest challenges of mental illness – isolation – Madison created its Social-Recreation program. This program has monthly events of city outings (e.g. to the AGO, the ROM, movies); holiday parties; and summer countryside retreats. We also offer weekly Art, Hispanic and Women’s peer support groups as well dance and yoga classes. In addition, we have a long standing Client Vocational Program which offers training and employment opportunities to our clients, as well as a Client Education Bursary Grant Program. Our case management and supportive housing programs offers our clients a range of levels of support from low, medium, and high on-site support, all the way up to a 24/7 on-site intensive high support housing program for long term users of the shelter system. Many of our programs are not currently funded, such as our Social-Recreation and our Client Vocational Program. Demand always exceeds current donations for our Client Education Bursary Grant Program.
