Mission Statement

Nelson Youth Centres provides unique holistic client centred clinical treatments and support to children and youth between the ages of 6 and 18, with Identified Mental Health Challenges, and their families. Our Collaborative, Community Based, Multi-disciplinary approach ensures timely delivery of appropriate interventions that supports and develops Social/Emotional Competencies in the children we serve. Our practices empower families and their children through learning and applying skills and strategies that enhance Healthy Attachment and Developmental Relationships. Our work reduces the use of intensive mental health services and supports Healthy Social Participation in the community.

About This Cause

Nelson Youth Centres is an accredited children's mental health centre that opened its doors in 1978 in response to identified needs of children, youth and families in Halton. The Centre has grown in response to the needs of the community; 1998, the Centre expanded its services to 7, 8 and 9 year olds and doubled the size and capacity of its facility resulting in a significant increase in the number of children served to address the growing needs of the community; and 2005 the Centre expended its services to include youth age 15 to 18. Today, the Centre provides a rich array of treatment programs to support the emotional and social well-being of children and youth between the ages of 6 and 18 while strengthening families. Annually the Centre treats 400 children, youth and parents in Halton. Programs are provided in a therapeutic setting with a safe, home-like environment setting and/or in the community aimed at strengthening the social and emotional well-being of children and youth. Treatment programs focus on the unique needs of children, youth and parents to help foster effective relationships at home and in the community. Individual and family counselling and parent support groups operate in conjunction with the group programs to enable parents to build effective relationships with their children, parenting skills and coping strategies. The ultimate goals of the programs is to empower children and youth with identified mental health challenges, and their families, to form healthy attachment relationships OUR PROGRAMS Group Therapy: Treatment and Counselling Group based treatment program that targets children ages 6 to 14 who exhibit low self-esteem, difficulty expressing emotions, poor peer relationships, lack of social/life skills, behavioural difficulties in the home and/or school. These children often suffer bullying from peers and struggle in social groups. The program goals are to enable children to learn to self-regulate their emotions, develop effective relationships, improving social skills, and effective learning and coping strategies. Reconnecting Youth Program Community base counselling program that target youth ages 14 to 18 who exhibit social emotional issues such as anger management, poor social skills, difficulty with communication, anxiety, depression and family dynamics. Service are delivered in the youth in their own community and working together with all relevant players involved in the youth's life which is essential for successful outcomes. The program goals are to empower youth to be able to be independent in the community and transition into adulthood. NYC Autism Program A social skills program is for children on the Developmental Spectrum Disorder between the ages of 8-12. The program focuses on the development of social skills through cooperative games, arts and crafts, outings, and socially based group work. Group Therapy: School Focused Treatment and Counselling Group based treatment program that targets children ages 9 to 12 who have significant social and emotional issues and are struggling to stay in school. The program works closely with both the schools, and families. The program goals are to enable the children to self-regulate their emotions, develop effective relationships, social skills & learning strategies that will enable them to maintain their school placement. Family Support Program The parent support program provide family/caregiver skill building and support services enhance parent, caregiver or guardian capacity to understand, support and adaptively respond to the mental health needs of their children and youth. The skill building and support services enable the family, including parents, and/or guardians to better address a child or youth’s mental health issues by changing attitudes and behaviors, providing support as they adjust to new diagnoses, building skills and competencies, and/or creating awareness and resiliency. The Family Support Program is a group based program that provides support to parents and caregivers in conjunction with their child’s attendance in the After School Therapeutic Program and the Half Day Intensive Program. The Family Support Program aims to assist and empower parents/caregivers through learning and applying skills and strategies that enhance healthy attachment and developmental relationships.
