Mission Statement
Mission: To inspire children and youth to achieve their full potential through learning and performing orchestral music.
About This Cause
Vision - Music and Social Change: To be a world-leading, innovative and hope-instilling music program, distinguished by excellence and for having a positive impact on children and youth and communities throughout New Brunswick. In order to achieve this vision the NBYO has evolved as a “cultural ecosystem”, a community of interacting programs and people, aligned around a common mission. The elements of the NBYO cultural ecosystem include: - local children’s orchestras – Sistema New Brunswick, in 10 communities in NB - regional youth orchestras – Moncton Youth Orchestra; Saint John Youth Orchestra - provincial youth orchestra – NBYO - professional orchestra (of Sistema NB Teaching Artists) – Tutta Musica The NBYO engages youth musicians from grade one through university. Programs are located in New Brunswick urban and rural communities, north and south of the province and engage anglophone, francophone and First Nations youth and newcomers to Canada. Our network of orchestras engages more than 1,200 New Brunswick children and youth, employs more than 60 professional musicians in education and performance, and in the past year, presented a record 144 performance events to collective audiences of more than 81,000 people. NBYO - the social innovator The NBYO launched Sistema NB in 2009, a free daily after-school program that uses music and the orchestra as a means for social change for children who otherwise would not have the opportunity. A performance powerhouse Over the past 10 years, the provincial youth orchestra has amassed a track record of success in the ambition and quality of its musical performances. This is the result of: a growing developmental program – Sistema NB, MYO, SJYO; a strong, dedicated faculty of Teaching Artists; and the engagement of special guest clinicians, conductors and artists from across Canada and internationally each year. The high level of the orchestra musically is reflected in the progressively challenging repertoire that is inspiring our young artists, such as this year’s performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. As validation of its musical excellence, the NBYO won the 2008 ECMA and is nominated in 2019. NBYO has commissioned several original works, including: Wolastoq Fantasia (2019), Sam Arnold; Sea to Sea (2017), Howard Shore; and, Keeping Faith (2014), Kevin Lau. Milestones performances include National Arts Centre, Ottawa (2017), Smetana Hall, Prague (2014), and the Musikverein, Vienna (2011). The NBYO enjoys large and growing audiences and increasing levels of media and public visibility. A career path in New Brunswick for professional musicians The key resource to sustaining this cultural ecosystem is the staff team of more than 60 professional musicians, the Teaching Artists of Sistema NB. The NBYO is the largest employer of full-time artists in Atlantic Canada. This number will grow to more than 77 in this multi-year plan. As such, attracting and retaining Teaching Artists is one of our greatest challenges and highest priorities. Furthermore, the career path of ‘Teaching Artist’, a professional, performing artist, meaningfully engaged in the social challenges of the wider society, is recognized as an essential part of effectiveness, impact and sustainability for arts organizations. Programming Focus: Children’s orchestras, currently more than 1,000 children, in ten locations in NB; 3 hours/day, 5 days/week, plus a summer camp program, more than 500 hours of instruction annually for each child. By 2021-22 the number participating will increase to more than 2300 children daily in 13 locations in NB. The annual calendar is organized in trimesters and the repertoire designed to develop technique and theory progressively, with a public performance at the end of each trimester. Repertoire includes arrangements of symphonic music, Canadian and popular music. In the past year there were 75 Sistema NB performances with more than 27,600 people attending. Regional youth orchestras, comprised of our most advanced Sistema NB musicians as well as others chosen by audition from private teachers in the region; currently 125 musicians, 5 hours/week of instruction, more than 200 hours of instruction annually for each musician. There are two regional youth orchestras in our program with another two planned for 2021 and 2022. The programing focus includes sections of important symphonies, collaborations with Canadian (or NB) composers or artists, Latin American repertoire, internal solo competitions to stimulate technical growth, and a chamber music trimester. In the past year there were 9 MYO and SJYO performances with 5,800 people attending. Provincial youth orchestra, comprised of the most advanced musicians province wide, chosen annually by audition; 85 musicians, 150 hours of instruction annually. The programming focus includes a major symphonic work annually, a contemporary Canadian composition, a concerto competition/performance to stimulate technical growth, popular music, e.g. movie theme, a virtuoso overture and music from the Americas, all of this in cycles of 3 years to build a higher level of performance. The NBYO tours throughout the province annually, with 9 performances in the past year and 6,400 people attending. Programming also includes: - Guest artist performances with the NBYO, this year with iTromboni, Acadian vocal trio Troiselle, and Les Jeunes Chanteurs d’Acadie - Commissions of original works – this year Wolastoq Fantasia (2019), by New Brunswick composer Sam Arnold - Periodic performance tours. The last was a 2017 tour of our Canada 150 program and included performances throughout New Brunswick as well as at the National Arts Centre and Maison Symphonique du Montreal. Tutta Musica Orchestra Tutta Musica strives to make live orchestral music more accessible, engaging, and relevant to more people throughout New Brunswick. The group consists of the more than 60 professional musicians who are the Teaching Artists of Sistema NB, Bachelor and Master performance graduates of some of the top university and conservatory music programs in North and South America. Tutta Musica brings an energizing, interactive dimension to musical shows and engages classically trained musicians in all forms and genres of music. Tutta Musica collaborates with artists in comedy, theatre, and dance and creates original works, featuring New Brunswick themes, culture, and people. TM seeks out collaborations and strong, long-term partnerships that make a positive difference within our communities. Tutta Musica has performed full orchestra and chamber concerts throughout New Brunswick. Smaller performing ensembles include Port City 5, East Coast Brass and Tutta Flutta. A good example of the success of this approach is this year’s fourth annual, professional musical theatre co-production with the Capitol Theatre - “Beauty and the Beast”, 11 shows and 9,500 in attendance. This collaboration benefits greatly from the leadership of our Music Director/Conductor, Tony Delgado, who brings significant expertise and experience as former Music Director of the National Theatre in Caracas, Venezuela where he directed symphony, ballet and opera productions. Other examples from the past year include: - The Nutcracker (December 2018): four acclaimed performances (3000 in attendance) of Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet with the Academy of Classical Ballet & Modern Dances - Handel's Messiah (April 2018): four Easter performances (1,600+ in attendance). Produced by Tutta Musica with soloists and choir and co-presented with Hillside Baptist Church, Moncton. With this approach Tutta Musica is expanding the audience for live, orchestral music in New Brunswick. In the past year, there were a record 48 Tutta Musica performances with 42,500 people attending. With the expansion of the season program and addition of new initiatives like the Fundy Opera Festival, Tutta Musica is poised to greatly enlarge its audience in New Brunswick. Awards/Prizes: The NBYO is nominated for a 2019 ECMA Classical Recording of the Year Award for a special commission to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday, ‘Sea to Sea’, by Howard Shore, performed by the NBYO, soloist Measha Brueggergosman and a special Canada 150 Choir.
