Mission Statement
Nokee Kwe, founded on Indigenous principles, is dedicated to creating, promoting, and sustaining culturally sensitive environments, which encourage and support personal development and self-determination. At Nokee Kwe, our vision is to be the leader in holistic, comprehensive education and employment services for Indigenous people and everyone, assisting you in making good, meaningful life choices.
About This Cause
Nokee Kwe is a not-for-profit, charitable organization delivering employment, training and educational programs and services to Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals in a holistic and culturally sensitive environment. Our mandate is to offer services geared to those experiencing challenges with unemployment; career decision-making; precarious employment; employment maintenance; literacy; school/training supports; career transition; youth/adults looking for their first job or job change. Our organization focuses on identifying and finding solutions to employment, career choice, education, and literacy barriers, and assisting with sound decision-making. Community referrals and advocacy can include: Health; Mental health; Addictions; Poverty; Homelessness; Personal Stress; Clothing; Food; Legal; Financial Literacy; Disability; Undiagnosed Issues; Lack of Cultural Connection; and others. We also provide employment support to skilled and trained individuals, such as foreign-trained individuals, who are recently unemployed, underemployed, on a contract or short-term work. This also includes those recently graduated or about to graduate, new immigrants, those looking to re-enter the workforce after an absence, and individuals looking for an apprenticeship. Additionally, we help arrange job shadowing, job trials/placements and informational interviews. For Businesses, we provide assistance in recruitment, training, and keeping local talent. We arrange placements (try before you buy) for businesses, and financial supports, to qualifying participants, to offset the cost of placements or training newly hired individuals. We host job fairs (including virtual) and provide a number of recruitment-related services, such as advertising job postings. Our Positive Voice program supports the development of positive narratives of Indigenous women and works on building networks for urban Indigenous women in career and education transition stages. Positive Voice is innovative and award-winning because the program sheds light on the distorted stereotypes and unique realities of Indigenous women. Nanda, translating to “ seek; look for '', is an educational digital skills training program with a focus on delivering services to Indigenous women 18 years or older. Nanda provides participants with training in fundamental coding skills. This program accounts for the growing tech industry and job opportunities within this field, providing women with essential skills and preparation for a range of software, and digital database employment opportunities. Nonetheless, we offer Mashawizii, translating to “he/she is strong'' catered towards Indigenous youth populations. Mashawizii draws from Indigenous knowledge-sharing practices such as digital storytelling. This program aims to empower Indigenous youth by connecting them to their culture and community members while gaining marketable life skills. Digital storytelling is a creative, therapeutic outlet for individuals to share their realities, stories, and experiences in a safe environment. The proliferation of intergenerational trauma within a contemporary colonial society detrimentally impacts the well-being of the Indigenous youth population. In turn, Mashawizii is a valuable program offered to support the healing process through shared lived experiences and understanding.
