About This Cause
Saskatoon Open Door Society (SODS) believes in helping newcomers get settled into their new life in Canada. We strive to help both immigrants and refugees feel welcome, get connected and develop a sense of belonging. We provide assistance at every step of the settlement journey. Areas of service include Settlement and Family Support Services, Settlement and Community Support Services, Employment Services, Language Services and Childcare Services. Settlement and Family Support Services at SODS includes Needs Assessment, Referral and Support (NARS), Refugee Assistance Program (RAP), Family Support programs (men's, women's and parenting), Case Management and Crisis Counselling, Refugee and Immigrant Family Strengthening (RIFS), Provincial Settlement Advisor Program, One-Year Window, Translation services & Interpretation services, Notary Public and Childminding. Settlement and Community Support Services at SODS include Community Connections (mentoring, matching and volunteering) and Cultural Bridging information sessions, training sessions, presentations, cultural events, social events, senior's programs and partnership building. In addition, the Settlement Support Workers in Schools (SSWIS) is a school-based outreach program that connects newly arrived families with services and resources in the school and community. SODS also offers a variety of Youth programs. This includes in-school programming, after-school programming (mentorship, educational, leadership and recreational programming) and special event programming. Employment Support is offered through one-on-one career counselling, workshops (resume writing, job search and effective networking skills, interview preparation and how to effectively use LinkedIN), classroom-based programming, individual programs and general guidance and advice for job seekers. Additional services for job seekers includes translation, notary public, over-the-phone interpretation services, client financial support services, entrepreneurial programs, job fairs and an annual Diversity Gala. Saskatoon Open Door Society follows the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs), and offers LINC levels 1-4, as well as literacy and pre-literacy levels. In addition, SODS offers a special English class, as well as Summer Fun Programs for school-aged children whose parents are participating in our LINC classes. Other language learning opportunities include Conversation Circles, English-4-Employment and SSWIS Language Camps for newcomer children and youth. SODS has two licensed Childcare Centres that provide a special place where children of refugees, immigrants and non-immigrant families receive quality childcare. SODS services are mainly for permanent resident adult, youth and children newcomers and their families. SODS does provide services and programming for newcomers of other immigration statuses and categories including new Canadians.
