About This Cause
Shuswap Children's Association (SCA), which was established in 1982, is a non-profit child development centre offering a wide variety of services designed to support children and youth aged 0 - 19 with support needs and their families living in the Shuswap Region of British Columbia. Our geographic service area is vast and many of the town and cities within our jurisdiction are considered to be rural areas of the province, where it is a challenge for families to access to services. Originally known as Shuswap Exceptional Children's Association (SECA), Shuswap Children's Association was formed by a group of parents of children with support needs, who found they were unable to access services for their children. They were joined by community professionals service providers and others who shared the goals of the parents. The Association's first program was a preschool with 18 children with support need, who were funded by the then Ministry of Social Services, along with 18 non-support needs children. The children were supported by three trained staff members and an annual operating budget of under $50,000. This program started in 1986 with financial support from the Variety Club, and when Ladybug Preschool opened its doors, it was located on the lower floor of Salmon Arm Elementary School. In 2004, SECA changed its name to Shuswap Children's Association (SCA), as it is more reflective of the organization's current goal, purpose as well as its programs and services. SCA has been accredited under the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) since 2006. As an organization, we value (1) Communities where all children are supported and accepted, (2) a family-centered approach, respecting the rights, opinions, and involvement of everyone, (3) the contributions made by staff, volunteers, and our community partners, (4) working in partnership with families in community professionals, (5) creating the best environment for children, youth, and families' health development and wellbeing.
