About This Cause
Our organization was founded in 1984 by a group of small and mighty group of Seniors who felt strongly that Seniors needed a place to gather in our community. As a result our foundation program, THE AGING WELL PROGRAM was created and continues to this day. The Sicamous and District Seniors Centre Society has learned a considerable amount of information throughout its history, about the needs of its Seniors. While there have been many different services tried, started and stopped, the four services listed next comprise the core components of our Aging Well program. As well, Seniors are not only welcomed to volunteer but do volunteer at all events and activities to the level that their health and wellness allows them. Description Of Aging Well Program Activities 1. Breaking Bread- We provide meals three times a week. This meal service is well known throughout the community & often attended by non-Seniors of all ages 2. Exercising for Seniors - Seniors participate in a low impact exercise program that includes exercise from a chair or standing, yoga type, a minimum of two times per week 3. Socialization and Special Events eg. a regular early morning coffee club is host by Seniors for Seniors and is well attended up to 3 times a week, Murder Mystery, Dances, Games Nights, pancake breakfasts, phone check ins, statutory holiday & birthday celebrations & garage sales are some of the special events that happen year round. 4. Aging Well Learning about the Challenges of Aging- Throughout the year, learning sessions offered include but are not limited to the following topics: The Dementia Epidemic, Safety for Seniors, Elder & Senior Abuse, The Importance of Wills & Power of Attorneys, Palliative Care Services, Mental Health and Seniors How Many People Participate & Community Benefit As a result of data collected during our past fiscal year, we are able to show the following information about participation in our program. This year we served approximately 5000 Seniors over 5000 meals. We hosted 26 events that included six pancake breakfasts, 3 murder mysteries, 3 dances, and 11 education sessions, which an additional 3000 people attended. Finally, we contributed over 10,000 volunteer hours to the local economy. All of these activities were Seniors led, and all revenues were returned to support the continued operation of the Aging Well Program as well as creating a far reaching community benefit where generations intermix and include Seniors in more community activities. A wonderful example is the addition of a Scooter Race for Seniors during the July Long Weekend Bike Show.
