Mission Statement

Elizabeth Fry Toronto delivers gender based, trauma informed services and advocates for justice and equity for women and non binary people who are criminalized and their families.

About This Cause

With over 70 years of experience as Toronto’s only agency specifically focused on meeting the needs of women in conflict with the law, we provide supportive services, community-based programs and transitional housing to women who have either been or are at risk of being in conflict with the law, and equip them with skills, supports and resources that empower them to create meaningful change in their lives, and ultimately advance equality for women. Our client-centered, trauma-informed and harm reduction based service models are rooted in a strong understanding of the intricate relationship between social and economic marginalization, trauma and abuse, survival, crime, and incarceration. We work alongside each woman to address her unique needs by assisting with the development of a self-directed life plan that is holistic, personal, practical, and achievable. We meet our clients where they are at in terms of readiness, offering interventions at several access points along a continuum from destabilization, foundation building, transition, consolidation and sustainable livelihood. Each year we help divert over 2,000 women from courts and prisons by engaging them in programs and services that incorporate trauma-informed counseling and healing, education and employment supports, housing supports, renewed family and social connections, and an overall re-entry into the community, helping them to break free from or avoid the cycle of incarceration, homelessness, and poverty.
