Mission Statement

We attract people from around the world who share our ideals and vision for positive change. We believe in embracing challenges and taking action. Our students, researchers and alumni bring their unique voices to learning and discovery, shaping new ways of doing things and contributing to important conversations in topics that matter most, from human rights to global health to climate change. We are where imagination and action collide.

About This Cause

Our energetic university community is comprised of over 35,000 students, faculty and staff and 188,000 alumni. Over 22 per cent of our current students are international, representing 121 countries. The University of Manitoba is located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Ojibwe-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Red River Métis. We have a thriving community of Indigenous researchers, staff and over 2,600 self-declared Indigenous students. UM is committed to working with the Indigenous community to advance Reconciliation. Our university stimulates over $2.4 billion in economic activity in the province, and we are leaders in Manitoba’s knowledge economy with groundbreaking research in areas such Arctic systems and climate change, immunity, inflammation and infectious disease as well as population and global health. With a strong legacy of excellence to guide us, UM and its dynamic community of researchers, students, faculty and staff is committed to act and to lead. The positive impact we create is felt throughout the province, across the country and around the world. The University of Manitoba is a coeducational, nondenominational, government-supported institution, and it is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. UM is proud to be host to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
