Mission Statement
To help youth from underserved communities achieve their full potential.
About This Cause
Since 1974, we have worked with more than 300,000 young people, using camp experiences to develop social and emotional skills and learning and innovation skills. Our participants may remember the canoe trips and campfires best—but we’re focused on the horizon, on ensuring youth have the skills and opportunities needed to thrive, pursue their education, find meaningful jobs, enrich their communities, and lead fulfilling lives. We believe in the transformational power of the Tims Camps experience to change the trajectory of a young persons' life. With 1.2 children and youth living in poverty in Canada, access to supports and opportunities to allow them to thrive are scarce. Research has shown that income is the most important predictor of a healthy life - even more important than lifestyle or genetics. Without equal access to basics like food, education, stable housing and quality healthcare, life trajectories can differ dramatically. For families living in low-income communities, the basics of life can be a daily struggle. Youth living in these circumstances face added and often devastating vulnerabilities and pressures on academic performance, relationships and physical and emotional health. Growing up in this environment can greatly damage a young persons' ability to develop the essential skills required for future success, and increases the chance that the cycle of poverty will be repeated. Our two signature programs: Summer Camp Program and School Program School Program- Partnering with schools from priority neighborhoods where the majority of youth are living in low-income households, students in Grade 6-8 participate in two four-day overnight visit to camp. Between camp visits, students work to achieve personal goals that support development in four key areas: personal wellbeing, academic success, meaningful employment and community connection. Summer Program- Every summer for five years, youth aged 12-16 attend a 10-day camp experience. Each year of the program builds upon the last with increase challenges, learning opportunities and targeted skill development. In-between camp visits, campers work on specific constructive actions in four dimensions related to their community, health, school and future.
