Mission Statement
Deaf Children's Society of BC provides a family-centred, language-rich environment for a child to thrive and be successful in the community be access to early language exposure.
About This Cause
Deaf Children's Society of BC offers individual services to families including Speech & Language Therapy and instruction in American Sign Language. We offer group programs including the only Preschool for Deaf children in the province of BC and also provide professional supports and instruction to other preschools in the Province of BC. The Ministry of Child and Family Development has recently approved severe funding cuts to Deaf Children's Society of BC resulting in the potential closure of the only preschool in the province that provides instruction in American Sign Language and English for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. Please help by donating to our Preschool ! At Deaf Children's Society we believe Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children have the innate ability to become fully participating, independent, successful members of society. To this end, we: -believe a Deaf child is a child first -believe any child will thrive given accessibility to a complete, rich and natural language early in life with the provision of American Sign Language and English -believe in empowering families with knowledge and skills vital to the overall development of their deaf child including language, cognition and social emotional development -believe in a family-centred approach whereby the Deaf child is an active family member and develops healthy relationships -recognize the value of families and children from diverse backgrounds and cultures with unique needs, and the importance of building from families strengths -believe that given the social nature of learning, Deaf children thrive in an environment with opportunities to learn with Deaf peers
