About This Cause

United Way Regina improves lives locally, making our community a better place to live for all of us. We advance community well-being with proven, data-driven approaches designed to address the root causes of stubborn social issues in the areas of education, income and health – the building blocks to a good life. In 2019, United Way Regina expanded its reach to work with the communities of Weyburn, Swift Current and Moose Jaw. At United Way Regina, we know the importance of working together to achieve a shared goal; complex social issues simply cannot be tackled by one person or organization alone. A prime example would be United Way Regina's operation of 211 Saskatchewan: a free, confidential 24/7 service that connects individuals to human services in the province by telephone, text or web chat, plus a searchable website with over 5,000 listings of social, community, non-clinical health and government services in Saskatchewan. 211 Saskatchewan a joint initiative with United Way of Saskatoon, alongside several other key partners. We continue a whole-community approach on signature initiatives such as making sure children have the tools and resources they need to grow into healthy, self-supported adults. For us, this means placing a specific focus on grade 3 reading. Why? Because prevention beats intervention. And in preventing poverty, violence and crime, one factor is all-powerful: Education. Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the most telling indicators of future high school graduation. If a young child is not reading proficiently by third grade, they are: 4X more likely not to graduate on time or at all 6X more likely to be involved in the criminal justice system 4X more likely to live in poverty Currently, 1 in 4 children in Regina do not read proficiently by third grade, putting them on the fast-track to dropping out. Together, we can change these numbers. This is why we are bringing together school partners and community leaders to work on improving educational outcomes in Regina and surrounding areas. And we continue to provide everything kids need to learn without distraction: stable housing, food, mentors and many other resources. Your support provides children and families the tools and resources they need to achieve their full potential, in school and in life. Thank you for improving lives locally.
