Mission Statement
The Vancouver Recital Society seeks to foster and secure the future for classical chamber music and recitals by engaging and enlightening audiences through the presentation of the world’s finest musicians, both established and emerging. Having carved out a place as the “city’s premier series of intimate classical music concerts” (Vancouver Magazine), the VRS has earned the respect of musicians and presenters around the world.
About This Cause
Founded in 1980, the Vancouver Recital Society (VRS) began presenting recitals in the the Arts Club Theatre on Granville Island, and in 1984, moved its performances to the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre. The VRS has built one of the most loyal audiences on the continent thanks to the quality of concerts and a willingness to take risks on the next generation of classical music’s superstar performers. Well known musicians who have made their Canadian and/or Vancouver debuts under the auspices of the VRS include pianists Sir András Schiff, Lang Lang, Murray Perahia and Evgeny Kissin, violinists Joshua Bell and Maxim Vengerov, renowned mezzo sopranos Cecilia Bartoli and Joyce DiDonato. The Edwina and Paul Heller Next Generation Series has become the ‘Gold Standard’ in discovering emerging artists and many other presenters through North America (and around the world) take note of the artists presented by the VRS. Managers across Europe and the Far East know that they can reply on their musicians ‘getting noticed’ if they perform for the Vancouver Recital Society. In addition to first-class recitals, the VRS hosts master classes and mentors young musicians. The VRS’s Ru35 program, designed to attract young patrons to classical recitals, has grown steadily since its introduction, the VRS Youth Club offers school-aged students affordable subscriptions and Classics for Kids school concerts have delighted thousands of children from some of the Lower Mainland’s most economically challenged neighbourhoods.
