Mission Statement
The Wilderness Committee is Canada's people-powered, citizen-funded wilderness preservation group. We have been defending Canada’s most threatened wilderness areas since 1980, and have secured protection for some of the country's most iconic landscapes including Clayoquot Sound and Wood Buffalo National Park.
About This Cause
When the Wilderness Committee was founded in 1980 (originally, as the Western Canada Wilderness Committee), industrial development posed the biggest threat to Canada’s wilderness. Four decades later, the Wilderness Committee remains focused on protecting wild landscapes for their ecological value and as a habitat for increasingly threatened species. But we also recognize climate change as the greatest threat facing the natural world today. We work to oppose fossil fuel expansion and push for the transition to a low-carbon economy. We have approximately 25 active campaigns to change policy, legislation and/or practices in five areas: - Preserving Wilderness - Protecting Wildlife - Defending Parks - Safeguarding Public Resources - Fighting for a Stable Climate The Wilderness Committee maintains its independence by rejecting government and large corporate donations. Well over 90% of our funding from individual donors who are passionate about protecting a wild Canada. We refuse to accept that the protection of wilderness and wildlife must be at odds with human rights. We believe in environmental, social and labour justice, and ally ourselves with First Nations, unions and communities that strive for a better future. We put our boots on the ground in wilderness areas, wildlife habitats and rural communities where our campaigns are centred, and we put wild spaces into people’s hands through immersive experiences and stunning images.
