Mission Statement
The Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta (JHSSA) is dedicated to recording, preserving and presenting the history of Southern Alberta's Jews and the communities they built.
About This Cause
130 years ago Jacob and Rachel Diamond were among the first Jewish settlers to arrive in Southern Alberta. From this humble beginning to today, the southern Alberta Jewish families and institutions have played an important role in creating a vibrant community for all Albertans. To preserve and share this history, JHSSA collects personal and organizational archival documents, family histories, oral histories, cemetery records and photographs. Founded in 1990 the JHSSA is an independent not-for-profitorganization sustained through membership fees, fundraising, donations, grants and bequests. JHSSA serves as an important resourcefor students, historians, genealogists and many others seeking more information about their roots and about the Jewish communities of this area. Education is a vital part of the JHSSA mandate. We provide classroom resources, present public programs, mount displays, answer research questions, and annually participate in Historic Calgary Week. TheJHSSA archivalholdings are open to researchers and are the key resources for most of our programs and our journalDiscovery.
