Mission Statement
The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra is a stable, healthy community orchestra of 50 – 70 players. It is a versatile orchestra with a balance of paid and volunteer players and serving a dual purpose, to its community and to its players. It is one of the most successful professional/amateur orchestras in Canada. NSO Vision A symphony orchestra fully embedded in the community, secure in its artistic depth, provides for artistic development and growth and inspires players and listeners alike Artistic Mission Statement The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra fosters the performance of orchestral music, maintaining artistic integrity, responsibility and challenge within the community, and embracing the ideals of partnerships, outreach and leadership. It will provide the community with a comprehensive program of activities which satisfies a variety of concert-goers of all ages, and the needs of the professional, amateur and student musicians. NSO Mandate The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra exists to enrich the cultural mosaic of Newfoundland and Labrador and to foster and promote an interest in and appreciation of symphonic music in all age groups. It will continue to provide the province with a vital community symphonic orchestra and its players with a quality performing experience. Through its core performing ensembles, the NSO will present the public with the highest quality concert-going experience possible The NSO mandate also embraces the following core areas: For our Players • Steady improvement in the artistic quality of the orchestra through the expansion of the professional core of the orchestra and fee-per-service roster to ensure the stability of the orchestra’s composition and breed good musicianship (recognizing the unique composition of contract, fee-per-service, student and community players), and a gradual evolution in the orchestra’s model through ongoing professional development and performing opportunities for its players. For our Audiences • Expanded audiences through quality, imaginative programming that while it recognizes classical tradition, also meets the musical requirements of a range of audiences, including classical music, pops, special events, and music that appeals to the interest of children/students and families. For the Arts • Maintain the engagement of high quality guest artists – national, international and local – suitable for each production and series; and • Continue to develop strong links with, and support of, new and established composers within the province and country, for the development of new Canadian music including through the establishment of an NSO Composer in residence For our Community • Effective outreach and education programs that raise profile and build audiences; • Service to the entire “community” of the province through performances of the NSO and its ensembles in as many locations as circumstances permit; • Maintain opportunities for volunteer, youth and experiential learning students to participate in NSO activities; • Development and strengthening of community partnerships, including with the Memorial University School of Music, and effective integration into the local music and artistic community; and • Encouragement of student players and composers (school and post-secondary), including the granting of bursaries and scholarships.
About This Cause
Established in 1962 and incorporated in 1979, the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra contributes to the overall quality of life in Newfoundland and Labrador by fostering the live performance of orchestral music. Currently, the NSO is an 81-member semi-professional orchestra comprised of a small core of contract musicians, fee-per-service players, university music students, and other community players. The NSO Sinfonia is a professional ensemble consisting of 16 string players supplemented with other musicians as required. The Atlantic String Quartet (ASQ) is the resident string quartet of the NSO and is comprised of its Concertmaster, Principal Second Violin, Principal Viola, and Principal Cellist. All three ensembles present their own series of concerts plus special events. Together with the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Philharmonic Choir, the NSO family is comprised of more than 200 individuals and is by far the largest single employer of professional musicians in the province. Its contribution to the cultural fabric of the province is remarkable.
