Mission Statement

The Victoria Brain Injury Society provides survivors and their loved ones long-term support through the many steps (both backward and forward) of life after brain injury. From those just released from the hospital, to those who have lived with their injuries for decades, survivors consistently express gratitude and relief once they’ve walked through the Society’s doors. Finally, people who “get it”!

About This Cause

Whether it’s caused by a concussion or a car accident, a tumor or trauma, a stroke or some other cause, brain injury can have a severe impact on a person’s life. Victoria Brain Injury Society (VBIS) has been supporting brain injury survivors and their families for over thirty years. Our mission is to provide community-based programming, education and advocacy to survivors, to empower them to move toward emotional, economic and social self-reliance. Brain injury survivors can experience a range of issues from cognitive challenges with processing and understanding information, to difficulties with communication, emotional labiality, headaches, balance issues to name just a few of the common impacts. Survivors also often experience social isolation, exclusion and have difficulty gaining access to crucial social supports as the effects of the injury isolate them and make it harder to find work and support. Our dedicated staff and passionate volunteers welcome survivors into our safe, inclusive environment and give them the support they need in order to avoid the more severe consequences associated with brain injury, including family break-up, addiction, poverty and homelessness.
