Mission Statement
Columbus House seeks to improve the quality of life for children, youth, and families in Renfrew County by providing programs which focus on well-being and education. We offer these supports within an atmosphere that celebrates diversity, cultural sensititvity, inclusivity, and family involvement.
About This Cause
Columbus House is a multi service registered not-for-profit located in Renfrew County, Ontario. We opened our doors in 1989 for youth 16 - 21 who were unable to live at home for various reasons but still committed to completing their education, learning independent living skills, and preparing for employment. 24 hour supervision is provided by Child & Youth Workers for this voluntary residential program. Referrals are made to collateral agencies when recommended. The youth are encouraged to continue engagement with their families when possible. Admissions are made through child welfare, probation, school guidance counsellors/teachers, Ontario Works, Mental Health and Addiction agencies, parents/caregivers, and self-referrals. With the push for on-line learning in Secondary School, and throughout the pandemic, we noticed an increase in school and social anxiety with our youth. The Teen Compass program evolved to provide an opportunity to obtain up to 4 optional credits towards their diploma. Students are provided transportation and have lunch provided. On-line courses are completed in a small group setting with a Child & Youth worker supporting their academic success. Executive functioning skills are taught along with job preparation life skills, and mental health/addiction education. Referrals are made to outside agencies when deemed needed. The Young Parent Support Outreach Program supports pregnant and parenting youth 13 - 24 throughout Renfrew County. Renfrew County is the largest County in Ontario with no public transportation. Our facilitators provide parenting education, child development, nutrition skills, employment preparation, and liaise between the parent and school if continuing their education. Support is provided though in-home visits, group settings, virtual meetings, and pre-recorded you tube educational settings. Our clients are treated as a dyad with good attachment and positive mental health the focus. The infants/children of our young parents have first priority to spaces in our licensed childcare locations. Columbus House operates 2 licensed childcare centres, one in Pembroke, and one in Renfrew. We offer child centred programming for infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, and school age. Our spaces are open to the community and may be subsidized through the County of Renfrew Childcare Department.
