Mission Statement
Diffusions Gaies et Lesbiennes du Québec (DGLQ) is a Montréal-based not-for-profit organization with a mandate to encourage the production, presentation, and promotion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and queer (LGBTQ) media art and artists. Since its inception in 1987, DGLQ has annually produced image+nation, Montréal’s International LGBTQ Film Festival. image+nation’s mission is to promote and prepare both contemporary and future generations of queer storytellers and media makers. Through the development of educational and mentoring initiatives such as the I+N Prolab (inaugurated in 2016) image+nation continues its dedication to nurturing emerging content for an evolving queer cinema while building empathy through sharing stories with audiences here in Canada and throughout the world with its online initiatives. Over its 33 years of existence, DGLQ has also presented visual arts exhibitions and events, including an international festival of film and video work addressing the problematics of HIV/AIDS and collaborated with many local, national and international cultural groups to further disseminate the works of queer artists in Canada and around the world. Our goal is to present, promote and help produce as many queer Francophone, Anglophone and Allophone productions as possible, thus making DGLQ a unique cultural and artistic organization in Canada. As well as our artistic objectives, we also play an important socio-cultural role in the province through our outreach activities to community groups and different demographic groups [making works available for youth, seniors (of which there is very little available), culturally diverse audiences, LGBTQ immigrants/refugees, etc.], facilitating access to images that reflect their experiences through not only the Festival, but for individual and/or group screenings. To summarize, our objectives are to encourage production, present, promote and ensure that queer media art and artists reach their target audiences locally, nationally and around the globe.
About This Cause
A pioneer of LGBTQ cinema for over 30 years, image+nation is the oldest festival of its kind in Canada, showcasing award-winning local and international films that strive to preserve the authenticity and diversity of LGBTQ voices while chronicling an evolving queer cinematic practice. The Festival explores New Queer Storytelling - both the uniqueness and the universality of these stories - offering audiences contemporary representation of what it means to be LGBTQ in the 21st century. Stories to see and to share, image+nation, Montreal LGBTQ Film Festival reflects the beautiful diversity of queer voices in the Canadian cultural and social landscape to all. Help us bring New Queer Stories to the screen and share YOUR stories. In 2020, DGLQ launched IMAGE+NATION LGBTQ Montréal, a new web space that will host it's permanent virtual film content [I+N Festival+] as well as areas where audiences can discover filmmakers in discussion of their craft [I+N Explore]. Its future iterations will maintain an online presence in order to better make accessible the LGBTQ films that it traditionally makes available in venues. 2021+ will be hybrid, live venue screenings as well as virtual screenings, so we can better serve our mission of bringing LGBTQ stories to all for discovering and sharing. 2020 has also seen the launch of a Short Film Festival focused on bringing francophone, anglophone and all other voices to new audiences throughout Canada.
