Mission Statement

MISSION: To play a leadership role in promoting and supporting the community of organized camps, encouraging the growth and recreational experiences for children, youth and families. VISION - To be the recognized leader in the Manitoba camps community. Camp should be one of the most exciting times in a child’s life, yet due to financial barriers so many children in Manitoba are unable to participate. The Manitoba Camping Association through the Sunshine Fund (MCASF) has a mission to send kids from low income families to camp each summer (overnight or day camp). On average we send over 640 kids to camp each summer and often cannot fund every family/child who applies. Turning children away is less than desirable and we are continuously looking for new partners and corporate donors to help us raise the bar and impact the lives of more kids throughout Manitoba.

About This Cause

The Manitoba Camping Association (MCA) home of the Sunshine Fund is a registered charity established in 1937 to support organized children’s camp and provide financial support to children and youth whose families experience financial barriers that prevent them from participating in healthy recreation activities. On average the Sunshine Fund sends approximately 640 children to various camps throughout Manitoba and North Western Ontario, costing approximately $225,000 annually. Camp should be one of the most exciting times in a child’s life, yet due to financial barriers so many children in Manitoba are unable to participate. The Manitoba Camping Association through the Sunshine Fund (MCASF) strives to send 1000 under served kids to camp each summer, however based on available funding through public donations, many are turned away. Turning children away is less than desirable and we are continuously looking for new partners and corporate donors to help us raise the bar and impact the lives of more kids throughout the community. Facts about the Community we serve • 100% of the kids that apply are deserving • 70% of the children we support live in a gross household income of $31,000 or less (average gross household income is $25,000) • 40% of the children subsidized live in Rural Manitoba • Demand for camp exceeds our current capacity to fulfill The MCA relies highly on public donations to support Manitoba children and has been extremely fortunate to have the Winnipeg Free Press as a partner since 1979. All children should have equal opportunities to participate in healthy recreation activities and while we have made an impact on well over 24,000 children since inception, we also know there is a greater need in the community. • 70% of the children we support live in a gross household income of $31,000 or less • Approximately 48% of Manitoba children under the age of 18 live in low-income households • 28% of all the Winnipeg children we support live in the Downtown and Point Douglas area Our goal is to continue to increase our donor base and funding partners so that we can make 1000 kids to camp every summer our minimum impact. Additionally, our vision is to establish a scholarship program that provides kids supported through the Sunshine Fund an opportunity to obtain post-secondary education. We are well aware that the families we work with are experiencing difficulties and provision of post-secondary education to their children will be very difficult and almost impossible in many cases. Children that attend camp develop many essential life skills and we would like to support them even further by providing them with opportunities for a successful future.
