Mission Statement

Horizons for Youth is a shelter for homeless and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 in Toronto. We provide shelter and supportive services to up to 45 youth each day.

About This Cause

Horizons for Youth is more than a shelter. We offer five core programs designed to help youth permanently leave the streets behind. 1) Case Management At Horizons for Youth, we ensure that every resident is assigned a primary case manager. With the help of their case managers, each resident makes goals and creates a plan of action to work towards an independent and healthy life. Youth are accompanied to medical appointments, job search and housing appointments, and connected with a wide range of employment, health, legal, immigration and other community resources. 2) Mental Health and Addictions Support Approximately 85% of Horizons for Youth's residents experience mental health and addictions challenges. This program provides individual counselling, case management, crisis management, therapeutic group facilitation and assessment services to youth accessing the shelter. Many of these services are provided using an informal and relationship-building approach in the shelter’s common areas or by regular appointment. The counsellor attempts to connect youth to mental health and addiction resources in the community upon discharge from the shelter. This support helps our clients develop positive ways to combat their challenges and assists our youth transition out of the shelter system and get the care they need. 3) Day Program This program is a combination of workshops, group work and lessons designed to give youth the tools they need to live independently and excel in their lives. It has various modules in which youth can participate. The youth learn how to prepare meals, budget their money, manage their emotions, search for employment and develop other life skills. 4) Housing Program This program assists youth find and maintain housing. Many youth could excel on their own; however, a lack of affordable housing in the city makes it difficult to find somewhere to live. All residents of Horizons for Youth have the opportunity to meet with the Housing Worker every day to receive help looking for adequate and affordable housing. 5) Community Support and Aftercare Once the youth have left the shelter and are housed, they can participate in the Community Support Program. Our Community Support & Aftercare Worker assists youth by visiting them in their homes, providing transportation, food packages and referrals for furniture, and mediating with landlords. This program helps youth successfully transition to independent living.
