About This Cause
DISCOVER HOW WILDLIFE RESCUE IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE For 45 years, Wildlife Rescue has been providing injured and orphaned wildlife with a second chance at life. What began as a small grassroots initiative has grown into the busiest wildlife rehabilitation centre in western Canada. Each year, we provide expert care to nearly 5,000 wild animals, helping them heal and return to their natural habitats. As human activity continues to impact wildlife, the demand for our services is steadily increasing. On average, 14 animals arrive at our hospital every day from communities across the province. Our Wildlife Support Centre, operating 365 days a year, plays a critical role in guiding the public on wildlife situations—determining when intervention is needed and offering expert advice to ensure the best outcomes for both wildlife and people. In 2024 alone, we connected with the public over 52,000 times, ensuring wildlife in distress received the care they needed while also helping to prevent human-wildlife conflicts and reduce the spread of diseases. None of this would be possible without our dedicated network of over 200 volunteers who contribute thousands of hours annually. In 2024 alone, volunteers dedicated 23,265 hours to wildlife care, rescues, education programs, and public engagement—fostering a stronger connection between people and nature. HOW YOU CAN HELP WILDLIFE THRIVE Wildlife Rescue offers essential programs that protect and support wildlife and the communities who care about them: - Education and Outreach: Through public awareness campaigns, outreach events, and educational materials, we help communities coexist with wildlife, prevent injuries, and support a healthier environment for all. - Wildlife Support Centre: Our free helpline offers expert advice and real-time support, guiding the public in responding to injured and orphaned wildlife. This service helps protect animals while reducing unnecessary human intervention. - Rescue, Transport, and Release: Our dedicated team responds to public calls, rescues injured wildlife safely, and ensures they receive expert care before being returned to their natural habitat. - Wildlife Fostering: We place orphaned wildlife with wild foster families, allowing them to grow and thrive in their natural environment, increasing their chances of survival. - Waterfowl Rescues: We assist waterfowl families with young by guiding them from unsafe urban nesting areas to suitable nearby habitats, giving them the best chance to thrive. WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS With no core government funding, more than 85% of our funding comes from individual donations. Without wider support from businesses, municipalities, and the community, Wildlife Rescue wouldn’t be able to provide the critical services we do. Your support helps us meet the growing demand for wildlife care, expand our services, and continue delivering programs that benefit both wildlife and people across British Columbia. As human activity expands into natural habitats, the need for our services continues to rise. Over the past decade, wildlife patient admissions have increased by an average of 24.9% each year, while inquiries to our Wildlife Support Centre have surged by an astounding 298%. These numbers highlight the urgent need for Wildlife Rescue’s services to protect BC’s wildlife and support the communities that care for them.
