Mission Statement
Addressing the Social Determinants of Health through innovation, collaboration, education, support and harm reduction. We aim to help reduce food insecurity in the Grande Prairie region by providing healthy nutrition with dignity; increasing inclusivity, supporting families, and fighting poverty by facilitating wholesome meal hampers. Strengthening children’s education with back-to-school hampers and enhancing learning through nutritious food offered in school snack hampers. Elevating community spirit with traditional seasonal food hampers during Easter and Thanksgiving; with a main focus on making magic happen for thousands of people through Christmas hampers.
About This Cause
Harm Reduction Harm reduction is a public health philosophy which aims to reduce negative impacts of a behavior, either on an individual and/or population basis. It involves an honest, open, non-judgmental approach to social issues while meeting people "where they are at." This is realized through education, intervention and support. Client Support - Person centered support for people living with or at risk for HIV/HCV - Pre/Post Test Counseling - Referral for HIV and HCV Testing - Referrals to community professionals - Resource library and access to current information on HIV/HCV, including treatment - Take Home Naloxone kits are also available Education HIV/HCV education is provided for community groups, schools, agencies and businesses. Our presentations focus on HIV, HCV, STI's, Gender and diversity and Harm Reduction and can be tailored to meet the needs of any group. Harm Reduction supplies Safer-sex supplies are available onsite and through street outreach. We also offer needle distribution and disposal through street outreach. Outreach Services HIV North Society's staff provide regular street level support to the downtown core of Fort McMurray focusing on one-on-one education and distribution of harm reduction supplies. As well, HIV North Society collaborates with other service organizations in the community to ensure that access to supplies and education is as comprehensive as possible. Our other locations Support for persons living with HIV/HCV is available in Grande Prairie and Peace River.
