Mission Statement
Founded in 1988, Zoothérapie Québec is a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop, promote and offer programs and services in animal-assisted therapy that use dogs to help improve the health and quality of life of persons of all ages and conditions. Zoothérapie Québec serves more than 120 health, social services and educational institutions in the greater Montreal area each year, making us one of the largest organizations of our kind. Zoothérapie Québec performs more than 55,000 professional interventions annually. We work primarily with sick children, the elderly, people with intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorder, people with mental health issues, and so on.

ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY Animal-assisted therapy Animal-assisted therapy is an individual or group intervention where a qualified facilitator introduces people to an animal companion that has been carefully selected and trained to elicit reactions in order to maintain or improve their cognitive, physical, psychological or social potential. OUR APPROACH Zoothérapie Québec stands out for its clinical and professional approach to animal-assisted therapy. Our programs are subject to rigorous clinical supervision and ongoing evaluation, with a view to continuous improvement. Our programs are supervised by our clinical coordinator, a member of the Ordre des psychoéducateurs et psychoéducatrices du Québec. OUR PROFESSIONALS Each of our facilitators is a professional with a degree in health, social services or education. At Zoothérapie Québec, we talk about facilitators of animal-assisted therapy rather than “zootherapists.” Thus, our facilitators are first and foremost special educators, psychoeducators, social workers, occupational therapists, etc. OUR DOGS We have a team of 45 dogs, recruited through a rigorous selection protocol. In addition to regular veterinary care and continuous training, our dogs are regularly groomed to ensure an intervention that meets the highest standards of hygiene and safety. Most of our dogs come from animal shelters. Each dog is entrusted to a host family who participates in his training plan and makes sure to offer him a safe and warm home. We place great importance on ethics and we take the necessary steps to ensure that each of our dogs is treated respectfully at all times.
