Mission Statement
Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre was established in 1973 to enhance the lives of older adults in Calgary’s northwest. Today, over 650 members from around the city connect with each other through ongoing educational, recreational and social services programs. The Centre provides a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere for maintaining and enhancing the mental and physical well-being of Calgary’s growing senior population. Members enjoy a variety of dance, music, art, technology and exercise classes and clubs taught by some of the top instructors in the city. The Centre also hosts a weekly Tea & Conversation program designed to assist over 500 isolated seniors every month. Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization working to help seniors reap the benefits of an active lifestyle. We have a track record for providing an array of high quality music, art, dance, and fitness classes geared specifically to the interests of older people.
About This Cause
As Calgary’s aging population increases, so do the number of isolated seniors. Research shows that severe and prolonged social isolation leads to alarming increases in loneliness, depression, chronic health issues and emergency room visits. Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre’s Tea & Conversation program proactively combats these issues through a weekly event which promotes social interaction through dance, music, and stimulating conversation in a supportive environment. An average of 500 participants a month build and nourish vital friendships, and access supportive social services. For many, it is their only opportunity to get out and socialize during the week. T&C is extremely local in its focus and specifically targeted to the senior community. During 2019, T&C hosted an average of 141 people each week. That’s over 7,000 visits a year, at a cost of $10.00/visit – an increase of almost 150 visits over 2018. This increase is a strong indicator of the value and need of the program. Taxi service to and from T&C each week was available to 75 clients throughout 2019, at a cost of $17636. This taxi service, which is provided for qualifying clients, ensures that some of our most vulnerable seniors can enjoy the simple pleasure of getting out for the afternoon. T&C is the one thing that many of them look forward to each week. It is especially important for disabled seniors, or those with mobility issues who wouldn't be able to access the program without the transportation provided. In 2020 due to the Pandemic, we had to pivot how we served our membership. We provided frozen meals and food hampers to our members who were in need. We also had 75 volunteers doing phone outs weekly to isolated seniors.
