Mission Statement

Christie Lake Kid’s (CLK) mission is to enrich the lives and prospects of economically disadvantaged children and youth by providing quality year-round skills based programming. Since 1922, Christie Lake Kids has been responding to the specific needs of economically disadvantaged children and youth between the ages of 6-17 from the Ottawa area. Approximately 600 at-risk children and youth directly benefit from experiences in CLK programming each year both at our camp facility (located on Christie Lake near Perth, Ontario) with six weeks of summer camp offered; and from our strategically located year round programming which is offered in various high-risk, low-income communities in Ottawa. CLK currently offers programming which includes: dance, sports (skating, swimming, hockey and all sport), music, art, cooking and after school tutoring. All of our programs are offered at no cost to participants to alleviate barriers to participation. We include food, all supplies and personal equipment.

About This Cause

There are four main components of CLK programs that bring to fruition the mission and vision of Christie Lake Kids. Each part of the program is designed to maintain a continuum of support and dependable structure for the kids we serve. All parts are integral to our overall philosophy and include the following programs: Skills Through Arts and Recreation S.T.A.R. (ages 6-12), Leaders in Training (LIT- ages 13-17), Christie Lake Camp (ages 9-13) and our Youth Advisory Committee (ages 17+). All CLK programs have a high staff/volunteer to participant ratio which allows us to work more effectively with children and youth who have complex behavioral issues and specialized needs. With a reputation built on 92 years of service, Christie Lake Kids receives referrals for and works closely with other organizations such as Child and Youth Mental Health Service Providers (e.g., Crossroads Treatment Centre), Immigrant/Refugee Social Service Agencies, the Ottawa Children’s Aid Society, YSB - Youth Services Bureau, CHEO - Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, local Catholic and Public School Boards, Ottawa Community Youth Diversion Program, Ottawa Boys and Girls Club, and Ottawa Probation Services. Children and Youth in our Programs: • All participants live in poverty, 95% in social housing • 59% children in the neighborhoods we serve live below the Low Income Cut Off (LICO) • 54% of families are first generation Canadians or Aboriginal. • Nearly one in three participants within our programs is a visible minority. • Between 40-60% of participants have one or more diagnosed mental health diagnoses including ADSD, ODD, FASD, anxiety or depression. • Over 40% of participants have a diagnosed learning disability or a developmental delay. • Challenges related to addictions and family mental health diagnoses are common. • CLK creates an environment of appreciation for an individual's ethnicity, language, religion and culture. We foster an understanding, recognition, appreciation and sincere respect for our participant's multiculturalism and diversity.
