Mission Statement
The Romero House community welcomes refugee claimants with housing, immigration, and settlement support.
About This Cause
The Romero House community began in 1991 with a group who knew that refugees could be welcomed differently--not simply as clients or tenants, but as neighbours. With the help of many volunteers and the families they found in the West Bend neighbourhood of Toronto, Romero House grew. We provide transitional housing for 10 families at a time (40 people) who stay with us for one year after they arrive in Canada. In addition to the wraparound support we provide to those families, we also support hundreds of other claimants each year with accessing shelter, legal support, school, healthcare, and other social services. We provide basic necessities such as food, clothing, toiletries, and more. Finally we advocate politically for changes to address the problems we see on the ground each day. We envision a city in which refugee claimants in our neighbourhoods are safe, thriving, and know that they belong. We continue to be inspired by the life of Saint Oscar Romero of El Salvador, after whom we are named.
