Mission Statement
L'Arche is a charitable organization that provides home and day programs for men and women with developmental disabilities. In our homes people with disabilities and those who come to assist them live in family-like settings and work environments. We are an intentional community where mutual relationships are at the heart of our life together and where each person is supported to realize their potential.
About This Cause
L'Arche Greater Vancouver was founded in 1974 and the first people to come into the community were young people from Woodlands School and other institutions that housed children and adults with development disabilities. We have four homes in which 19 people with developmental disabilities share life together with those who assist them. This simple approach to shared living between people with developmental disabilities and assistants is a unique lifestyle and often a transformational experience. We also operate two community inclusion programs. The Emmaus Day Program aims to build security and belonging by participating in meaningful, recreational, social and volunteer outreach opportunities. Activities respect the abilities and autonomy of each individual while encouraging them to grow in relationships with others. The second community inclusion program, Neighbours Helping Neighbours (NHN), provides people with disabilities the opportunity to serve the wider community. They cut lawns, do yard work, and other chores for the elderly and others who aren’t physically able to perform these tasks. This has proven to be a valuable service as the NHN’s customers (seniors and people with physical disabilities) report that they are able to live independently, feel less isolated and have decreased risk of injury from doing outside chores. The NHN crew also provides volunteer support for the other community organizations in the Burnaby and South Vancouver area that include delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, gardening at the New Vista Society and taking care of the recycling at Collingwood Neighbourhood House. The quality of care experienced at L’Arche Greater Vancouver has been recognized by CARF (the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Our homes and programs are accredited with CARF earning the highest possible award, a three year status. The majority of L’Arche Greater Vancouver’s operational costs are provided by Community Living BC. However, we still rely on the generosity of individual donors, various granting foundations, community organizations and the corporate sector to bridge the funding gap and for programs and capital projects that are not covered by Community Living BC.
