About This Cause

The Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women (ehcw) was founded in the year 1992 as a non-profit and charitable institution. It provides programs and services for immigrant/refugee women and their families, enabling them to be successful in Canadian society. Since its very inception the organization has striven ceaselessly to alleviate the trauma, suffering and distress of newcomer women who are victims of domestic violence, poverty, isolation and stresses relating to resettlement in their new country of adoption. ehcw is a walk-in woman care center, where immigrant women are free to come in and discuss their diverse problems, including issues of spousal abuse, and domestic violence. We have also devised programs to assist seniors, who have been invited to settle in Canada by their children or grandchildren and upon arrival find that they are facing a situation of isolation and culture shock. At ehcw our staff works ceaselessly to assist women, and seniors in distress by providing them with support, life skills instruction, counseling, and educational support, so that they can focus on rebuilding their self esteem and eventually gain stability in their lives. The organization provides settlement and employment services. It assists in reduction of incidents of domestic violence on immigrant women and young girls. With the continuous influx of newcomers each year, achieving these goals throws up a challenge that calls for innovative solutions. The Corporation has launched unique projects, each created in response to an identified need. Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women seeks to empower women and their families through the dissemination of knowledge and information about their rights while providing support and guidance. Consequently, ehcw plays an important role in building a friendly community of opportunity, and enterprise. ehcw' Statement of Values Community We serve and reflect a diverse community and provide accessible support programs that improve lives and instill a strong sense of belonging among our participants.
