Mission Statement
Artsmart provides visual enrichment programming to the school community at Clinton Street Public School, in Toronto, Ontario. Artsmart is run by Friends of Clinton
About This Cause
Friends of Clinton Junior Public School was formed in 1989, in celebration of the centennial year of Clinton Junior Public School in Toronto, ON. Friends of Clinton received a substantial endowment from the estate of local resident and former student Beatrice Minden. In 2019, the City of Toronto named a community laneway for Ms. Minden. Friends of Clinton operates Artsmart, a unique visual arts enrichment program for all students at Clinton school. Artsmart operates under different models annually, enlisting local, professional artists to act as Art Room Coordinators or assist in developing visual arts programming for students. Focus is providing visual arts enrichment and skills development and exposure to careers in the visual Arts. Art modules range from crafting / stitching to the avant-garde and are focused on providing students with broad exposure to the visual arts. Approximately one-half of the student population at Clinton attends a special education program (learning and development disabilities, home support programs, etc.). Integration of the entire student population is a priority for the Artsmart program, and all classes are given equal time with the Art Room Coordinator. Similarly, all students proudly have their projects displayed at the annual Arts Night in May, which turns Clinton school into a veritable art gallery each year. Historically, Artsmart classes have periodically completed large-scale projects including murals and collages – examples include existing murals led by Sybil Goldstein and Indigenous artist Bonnie Devine. Funds received from RBC will be applied to program operating costs, including the provision of art supplies to teachers/students who are required to operate virtually during the pandemic, and a large community outdoor art project in 2021
