PROGRAMME ACTION REFUGIES MONTREAL

Montreal, Quebec, H3G1S6 Canada

Mission Statement

Action Réfugiés Montréal is a strong voice for refugees in Montréal and beyond. As a not-for-profit, faith-inspired organization we seek justice for asylum-seekers and refugees. We promote partnerships among people in refugee and faith communities and society at large for mutual empowerment. Through our Detention, Sponsorship and Twinning programs we provide hope and assistance while raising awareness of refugee rights.

About This Cause

ARM is the only organization with a refugee protection mandate to visit the Federal Immigration Holding Centre (commonly known as the Detention Centre) in Laval, QC. ARM staff, law students and volunteers visit the Centre weekly. ARM sponsors refugees each year. We have greeted over 800 people from 1992 to 2015. In 2015-2020 we helped over 500 refugees ( many Syrian ) arrive in Canada. The goal of our Twinning Program is to create social support and create connections for refugees and to allow Montreal women to learn about the refugee experience first hand. To that end, ARM matches refugee women with women already living in Montreal. Through regular meetings, the “twins” create bonds of friendship and solidarity. Refugees for the Twinning Program are often referred to us by social workers, lawyers and other refugee organizations. Women from Montreal usually contact us because they want to welcome these newcomers into the community and learn about the challenges refugees face. We speak out in university classes, community groups and in the media about refugee rights.
