Mission Statement
We believe in a well-balanced life and understand the importance of mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. We provide a safe space for Military and First Responders suffering from PTSD and their families to come to experience all areas of wellness through nature-based programs and open-minded community centred support.
About This Cause
Our Not For Profit Organization came about after the founding members navigated their very different journeys to get help, understanding and support with PTSD. Keen to continue their life's calling - to help others - they did what they could to meet other struggling colleagues from the world of First Responders and Military. This was usually public coffee shops or even their own homes which proved difficult to say the least! The situation changed when one of the founders was helping to move cattle at the Wineglass Ranch near Cochrane. Upon hearing the story and growing numbers of colleagues falling with PTSD, the kind and community minded Eklund and Wearmouth family provided a vacant 1920 ranch house for the founders to use and help others. So began the journey of forming Wayfinders. With the mission of creating a group of like minded, peer members, and a bucket load of enthusiasm to start the much needed renovation on the old house, the founders built a team of First Responders and Military to get stuck in! So far we have managed to procure a new roof from 2nd Generation Exteriors, new eavestrough from a generous donation by Walk For Veterans and free labour from Magic Roofing and Sidings. You and Yours Painting in conjunction with the local Benjamin Moore paints in Cochrane, gave the old house a beautiful new coat of paint. Generous help and support from other local companies such as Westwinds Carpentry, Riverbend Flooring, Ready To Roll dumpsters and Mr P. Potty, the old house is beginning to look like it might survive a few more years yet! A great deal of work still needs to be done, especially to make it safe, warm and comfortable. One aspect of support that will be offered to PTSD/OSI sufferers will be a Sensory Room, one specifically designed for enhanced meditation for those who's minds that just won't stop spinning. Conquering the ability of meditation is not seen as a 'nice to have' but an essential for the First Responders and Military that need hope and deserve another chance at life. The ultimate goal of the Wayfinders Wellness Team is to be a pioneering centre to help First Responder Organizations adequately and correctly provide psychological critical incident debriefing, surrounded by the sublime beauty and serenity the Wayfinders offers. In addition to this, we hope to procure another property that is in close proximity to the Wineglass Ranch that will be able to provide overnight accommodation for respite services and family support that goes beyond the day use facility currently available. We are keen to show our peers that post trauma growth is possible, and by encouraging participation in the nature based activities we hope to provide, they will become grounded once more and see life in a new, healthy and refreshing way.
