Mission Statement

To break the cycle of abuse in the African Community, by providing support to the whole family.

About This Cause

Ruth's House Society is a grassroots organization that is community-driven and dedicated to helping individuals within the African community who are experiencing domestic abuse in Alberta. Our main goal is to break the cycle of abuse by providing comprehensive support to all members of the family, including men, women, children, extended relatives, and the wider community. As pioneers in this field, we have established the first ethnocultural emergency shelter and resource center that caters specifically to women and children from the racialized, newcomers, and migrant African community. We believe that the approach to tackling sexual and domestic violence in racialized communities should be distinct. Our solutions are rooted in our community's core values, such as family, faith, and community. These values serve as the bedrock for our efforts to combat domestic violence. By working from within the community, we bridge the divide between us and the current service providers. Our response is proactive and guided by the principles of culture, traditions, and the elimination of barriers.
