Mission Statement
The Mission of Save A Dog Network Canada (SADN) is to provide a more humane solution to the current overpopulation of dogs roaming First Nation communities in northern Manitoba.
About This Cause
Activities Rescue and Rehabilitation of Sick and Injured Rez Dogs - Activity Description: SADN operates a proactive rescue program that identifies and assists sick, injured, or abandoned dogs in First Nation communities. We work closely with local volunteers and community members to locate dogs in need of immediate care, providing medical treatment and rehabilitation services. - Goal: To improve the health and quality of life for Rez dogs, ultimately reducing the stray population and fostering healthier communities. Networking with Rescues and Shelters Across Canada - Activity Description: SADN collaborates with dozens of dog rescues and shelters across Canada to share resources, knowledge, and support. This network helps us to rehome our adoptable dogs and learn best practices in dog care, while raising awareness about the challenges faced by Rez dogs. - Goal: To build a strong collaborative network that enhances the capacity of local communities to address dog overpopulation without facilitating adoptions, ensuring that all efforts are concentrated on community-centered solutions. Emergency Evacuation Support - Activity Description: Every year SADN provides emergency support for dogs and cats left behind due to fire and flood evacuations. This includes removing unwanted, sick or injured dogs, reuniting animals with owners, coordinating dog/cat food donations, feeding volunteers and veterinary care, if needed. - Goal: To ensure the safety and welfare of Rez dogs during emergencies, minimizing the risk of abandonment or harm during critical situations. Dog Food and Supplies Donations - Activity Description: SADN organizes donation drives and partnerships with local businesses and organizations to collect and distribute dog food and essential supplies to First Nation communities. This support helps families care for their pets and alleviates some financial burdens associated with pet ownership. - Goal: To promote responsible pet ownership and improve the quality of life for Rez dogs by ensuring they have access to adequate nutrition and resources. Spay/Neuter, Birth Control Implant, and Vaccine Clinics - Activity Description: SADN hosts regular spay/neuter clinics, offering birth control implants and vaccinations to the dog population in First Nation communities where veterinary care is non-existent. These clinics are hosted in remote communities by veterinarians and technicians and provide life-saving care to prevent overpopulation and promote dog health. - Goal: To significantly reduce the number of unwanted litters and improve the overall health of the dog population, fostering a more sustainable and humane approach to animal welfare within the community. Education and Partnership with Community Members and Leadership - Activity Description: SADN engages in educational outreach programs with community members, chiefs, and councils to discuss the importance of animal welfare. This includes assisting in the development of bylaws related to dog ownership, securing grants for animal welfare initiatives, and providing support for newly appointed animal control officers. - Goal: To empower communities with the knowledge and resources needed to establish effective animal control measures, promote responsible pet ownership, and enhance overall community well-being.
