Mission Statement
Our mission is to bring an iconic large 21st Century public planetarium to enhance life in Toronto and to create a virtual planetarium for Canada and the World. Space Place will introduce and inform the student, parents, tourist, the astronomy buff, and the merely curious – of the wonders of space, the role of humankind in space and an understanding life on earth (Arctic, Antarctic, the oceans, and deserts) and our impact on it. The public planetarium will display past and current accomplishments, Canadian champions and heroes in space and space related earth sciences, the future career opportunities in these sector for Canadians, and how space enables citizens to address earth-bound challenges from climate change to archaeology to peace and security. Every day will be career day at Space Place. Starting at the elementary level, children and the parents will learn about the prerequisites for their dream careers. Space Place will use the latest technology, showcasing VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality) and AI (artificial intelligence) applications in an innovative exciting story-telling format. Our events programs, website, social media, and physical exhibits will be designed to promote and support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) education for students, STEAM careers, STEAM recruitment, and continuing education – with special attention to expanding access by priority communities. Toronto is the only global tourist destination city that does not have a large, iconic public planetarium. The McLaughlin Planetarium, which had been a part of the Royal Ontario Museum, closed in 1995.
About This Cause
Space Place Planetarium Canada is a multi-disciplinary, community-based, Canada-wide charity with the objective of bringing a large, iconic 21st Century public planetarium for Toronto and a virtual planetarium for Canada and the World. It was founded in 2018, by stakeholders in astronomy, space sciences, and tourism. In 2020, Space Place initiated a virtual event series that has drawn a global viewership on its YouTube Channel. In November 2022, Space Place launched its public awareness and advocacy campaign. Our initial fundraising effort is to expand the awareness and advocacy campaign to a wider audience across Canada.
