About This Cause

TheMarriageAdvocates Canada (TMA) is a non-profit organization that was birthed from the hearts of a couple whose hearts are breaking for broken marriages and families. Our mandate is to serve the immigrant community by providing skills training, mentorship, coaching, and engagement with the community that will enable individual families to foster healthy relationships that will flow naturally into the health of our community. Our programs serve as preventive strategies for family disruption and domestic violence, with the inevitable benefits of improved mental health. We have seven branches for the work we do. 1) Thriving Relationships Workshops: We run the thriving relationships workshops 4 terms per year (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall), for 8 weeks (3 hours per week), where we teach skills on connecting/ reconnecting, healthy communication, managing conflict, forgiveness, managing the impact of extended family/ third parties, managing money in a relationship, seeing sex is a gift in a relationship, and how to love each other well. 2) Marriage/Relationship Mentoring: We bring together a team of experienced couples to come alongside less experienced couples to facilitate a thriving marriage/relationship. 3) Peer-to-Peer Support: We provide opportunities for peers to connect with others with a similar cultural background. It allows for the isolation that can be possible in relationships to be removed, where people can connect with someone who can empathize with their experience and provide a sense of community and understanding. 4) Couples Community Support: Couples doing life together is based on the principle of "you start to become those you spend time with the most". We will organize couples’ events like "sip and paint", couples bowling, etc. to allow couples to do life with others while having positive experiences in their relationship. 5) Expressive Arts: The arts have been the tool for communication within the African and Asian contexts. We use all five disciples of the arts (visual, dance/movement, music, drama/theatre, and writing/poetry) to communicate our message in a culturally responsive manner, as a form of intervention, and to improve mental health. 6) Community Engagement Events: Some of the issues that individuals face in their relationships are not unique to any one family. Because we do not often have these conversations in the open, it can feel like individuals are the only ones struggling with those issues. We want to engage our community in having open and honest communications about challenges in marriage and how to mitigate them. 7) Referral to culturally responsive counselors: For couples who have specific relationship wounds, to process their hurts and heal, we will make referrals to counselors who are culturally responsive and can relate to marital issues from diverse cultural perspectives.
