About This Cause
YCC - Youth Centres of Calgary is a charitable non-profit organization focused on reducing the effects of poverty and addressing the very real and urgent problems associated with at-risk youth ages 9 - 15 growing up in Calgary’s most vulnerable communities. We operate an after school centre and summer camp program for these kids during a critical stage of their development, they are malleable and it’s when the executive function (decision making) part of their brain is developing. The perfect time. Our centre is open from 3-6pm school days and 1-6pm during early dismissal days, typically Friday, which is the time-of-day police tell us that crime is most likely to be committed by this age group. Our youth centre in Ogden is a place where kids are fed, kept warm and safe, where they receive love and praise, are heard, understood and learn to listen, a place where they get what they need to thrive. Our program is free, kids register once, and can come anytime. The house has areas for reading in bean bag chairs, eating hot and healthy food, playing games, doing homework on refurbished laptops, playing basketball and foosball as well as getting music and art instruction. We also run free summer camps in July and August which run from 11am-3pm. We are scheduled to open a new centre in the community of Forest Lawn which will serve kids in Forest Lawn and Dover in the summer of 2024. We offer consistent care that is so important.
