Mission Statement
Clinic mandate: MISSION: To provide free legal services and promote community development in French and English to individuals with low income and not-for-profit organizations in Windsor and Essex County through advocacy, legal representation, education and support as part of Legal Aid Ontario. VISION: Social justice, empowerment and respect for language rights in our community. Our clinic mandate is set out very clearly in our Mission and Vision statement. We hold to the principles of clinic law and to our obligations to provide service in French as well as in English.
About This Cause
The Bilingual Legal Clinic of Windsor-Essex is a non-profit community clinic funded by LAO serving people with low incomes living in the region of Windsor and Essex County. The Clinic offers free advice, representation and referrals in both French and English to low-income residents of Windsor and Essex County. The services are provided by staff lawyers experienced in administrative law. They represent clients, give legal opinions or make appropriate referrals. All information is kept strictly confidential. The Bilingual Legal Clinic also engages in law reform activities, community outreach and public legal education. Our programs are the Southwest Integrated Legal Clinic’s French Language Service. The program ensure that all legal clinics in southwestern Ontario have access to French Language Services for their clients. We have the C.A.R.E for international workers Program. C.A.R.E is the acronym of Community, Assistance, Resources and Education. The program is a Community Partnership dedicated to assist International Workers in understanding and exercising their legal rights as well as to promote their overall health and wellness is comprised of enthusiastic members who represent community agencies that make significant contributions to achieve the goals of this program within their respective mandates which includes FREE legal services, public legal education, consular services, health services, pastoral care, wellness support, individual community coaching, occupational health and safety information, settlement services and organized activities, and which are committed to enhancing settlement and integration opportunities for all international workers in the Windsor and Essex County and other areas of the province of Ontario. C.A.R.E for international workers Program is made of 9 agencies: Consulate of Mexico in Leamington Organization with a mandate to provide consular assistance, ensure respect for their rights, avoid abuses from foreign authorities, inform to their relatives in Mexico, provide assistance to temporary agricultural workers hired under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (rights, obligations, taxes, health insurance, pensions; etc.), and advises Mexican workers hired to work in Canada under other labor programs. Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic Organization with a primary mandate to provide free legal assistance to people with low income in certain areas of law. Furthermore, it provides services in English, French, and Spanish, organize monthly information sessions, produce videos and information materials for International Workers and make non-official translations and interpretation. Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Organization with a mandate which includes the provision of free occupational health and safety information, education and support to farm workers (in English, Spanish and Thai) and to help them to keep healthy and safe while working in Ontario. Windsor-Essex Community Health Center in Leamington Organization with a mandate to provide primary C.A.R.E for all vulnerable/unattached clients (international workers) with no family doctor, to offer prenatal/postnatal care and support for international workers women. Further, it conduct community outreach, nutrition services, counselling and support, dietitian and wellness, classes and resources for health promotion. WECHC on Wheels, Mobile Clinic provides health care services for people who often face barriers accessing traditional health care services. Mettā Collective Meditation & Wellness Support Leads mindfulness and compassion meditation sessions with focus on trauma, resiliency and loneliness, grief and therapy support. Migrant Worker Community Program Organization with a mandate which includes entertainment services such as tournaments of basketball and domino, bicycle safety workshops, day trips to tourist places. Health & Information Fairs, Fiestas Patrias celebrations; liaison services (where you can go for help). English classes and translations services. Some services have cost. Temple of Buena Semilla Organization with a primary mandate to provide spiritual and pastoral care for the Spanish speaking population. Venue for workshops and delivery of information materials. Windsor-Essex Compassion C.A.R.E Community Organization with a mandate which includes the provision of training individual community coaches to help workers to address their individual challenges and self-rate their quality of life. Variety of services and programs (Educating Community, Public Awareness, Research, Building Connected Neighbourhoods, Compassion Care Hubs, Compassionate Community Helper program, Virtual Community Centre Calendar). The Neighborhood Organization Organization with a mandate to provide support, settlement and immigration services to workers in Ontario and across Canada, provide skills and capacity training to workers and local community groups by delivering tutorials/workshops/webinars to workers on various topics, identifies and fills gaps in supports and services for MFW through a coordinated community strategy, produces videos, and distributes welcome bags containing PPE, personal hygiene products and snacks. Sabrina Wright, senior manager at CIBC, is also the founder and facilitator of the Mettā Collective Meditation & Wellness Support. She is one of our partners of C.A.R.E for International Workers, since 2017 and has been volunteering with us through C.A.R.E for International Workers providing Mental Wellness Support to migrant workers in Leamington and facilitating meditation sessions through her non-profit group The Mettā Collective at the farms providing mindfulness sessions and wellness support.
