About This Cause
HISTORY From tragedy to triumph, the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation is HER legacy. On April 23, 2018, returning to work from her lunch break, on a warm and sunny Monday afternoon, Anne Marie D’Amico was killed in the Toronto Van Attack. She was only 30 years old. The D’Amico family needed to grieve the loss of their daughter and sister, yet somehow still wanted her to keep her spirit alive in their everyday life. On December 3rd, 2018, on what would have been Anne Marie’s 31st birthday, they launched the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation, a registered charitable organization focusing on supporting humanitarian causes that embody her spirit, in memory and in honour of Anne Marie. THE NORTH YORK WOMEN'S SHELTER The Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation is currently on a mission to raise $1M for the North York Women’s Shelter. For 33 years, the North York Women’s Shelter has been a place of healing, empowerment, and refuge from trauma and abuse for over 11,000 women and children. The new 24,000 square foot shelter (completed in March 2020) was built with each resident in mind. This evidence-based and trauma-informed space is currently home to approximately 17 families where 60% of all residents are children. THE ANNE MARIE D'AMICO COMMUNITY COLLECTIVE The Anne Marie D’Amico Community Collective will launch in the Fall of 2021 and, keeping COVID-19 restrictions in mind, will offer wrap-around services to women within the North York community who have or are experiencing violence. There are many barriers women face in accessing services (health, legal, immigration, etc) within our community that the Community Collective intends to address including, but not limited to: ● Trauma informed support that makes these services accessible to populations that are often denied service (eg. women living with disabilities, trans women, newcomer women etc.) ● Having multiple services offered in one place in order to reduce the stress of travel throughout North York or Toronto ● Support in navigating these complex systems so that women are given appropriate referrals and knowledge as to where to access support. Our partnership with Black Creek Community Health Centre supports our primary health care clinic. This clinic will support shelter residents and community members seeking violence against women services. This clinic provides medical care, harm reduction support, counselling, system navigation, and wellness support. THE TURTLE PROJECT Anne Marie was born on December 3rd. The D’Amico family continues to celebrate her birthday at the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation’s pinnacle fundraising event, The Turtle Project! The inaugural event took place in 2019 and sold out within a month! Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2020 event had to be cancelled, however, plans are currently underway for another exciting and sold out show in December 2021, and you’re invited! Learn more on our website and connect with us on social media to get the most recent updates. Anne Marie’s legacy doesn’t show signs of stopping! To date, the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation has raised over $500,000 since December 2018. Join us as we work to make the world a better place where women and children may live free of violence!
