Mission Statement
Chroma NB's mission is to cultivate the social and systemic transformations needed for 2SLGBTQIA+ lives to be supported, celebrated and uplifted through education, advocacy, and community resources. We facilitate allyship training for local businesses and non-profits to create a positive environment where 2SLGBTQIA+ community members can thrive, we create brave spaces for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to support mental health and build community, and we advocate on behalf of our community in our efforts to create a world where 2SLGBTQIA+ and all intersections of identity are recognized, celebrated and thriving.
About This Cause
Chroma aims to be proactive rather than reactive by providing resources for barrier reduction and basic needs for the rainbow community including food, gender-affirming garments (such as chest binders), access to safer/brave spaces, and menstruation products, to name a few. The overarching goal of Chroma’s work is to make New Brunswick a safe place for 2SLGBTQIA+ people to live and thrive. This work ultimately aims to prevent social isolation, homelessness, drug use, suicide, and violence by providing all-around support to this equity-deserving community in the region. It is important that Chroma does not duplicate services that are already offered, but to expand, support and enrich available services and activities and to fill the gaps in the 2SLGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse community. Chroma has a holistic approach to community wellness that can’t be provided by any one industry or sector; the work needs to be done by an intersectional resource centre that impacts all areas of life. While services to 2SLGBTQIA+ people are provided by guidance counsellors in schools, health professionals at the Teen Resource Centre, career support at the Learning Exchange, Chroma is the only organization that provides consistent programming and support as well as an approachable, community-focused, home-away-from-home atmosphere specifically for the rainbow community. We work in tandem with these organizations to utilize their expertise and support their programming. Our goal is to bring the lens of the rainbow community to these programs and collaborate on programming to maximize the community impact of our initiatives. Instead of simply communicating “you are welcome here” to the rainbow community, we strive to co-create brave spaces across this city that are built with the needs of the rainbow community in mind. Our goal is to meet people where they are. This means that we focus on outreach to bring this program to people, to their neighbourhoods, in places that are familiar to them such as community centres, public spaces, schools and care facilities. Last year, over 500 rainbow community members and allies attended our events, so we have already built some significant community relationships that will support this initiative. Chroma's program strategy is a continuous practice of listening and responding to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Our programs reflect the community as well as the unique skill sets of staff, volunteers, and art facilitators. Our programs are created and delivered in ways that actively engage and honour the intersectionality of community members. Collaboration and accessibility are cornerstones of all program strategies. Chroma always prioritizes community input to create engaging, intersectional programs with a strong emphasis on collaboration and accessibility. We emphasize collaboration with other organizations to maximize impact and ensure efficient use of funding and community resources. We align our program development with community needs by problem-solving collaboratively and addressing issues through a community-centred approach. Outreach efforts will also include building relationships with rural schools, healthcare providers, and community centres. Chroma also provides allyship training to businesses, nonprofits and governments. Through these activities, this initiative aims to reduce isolation, foster belonging, and build the kind of inclusive, resilient communities while ensuring queer people aren’t left behind.
