Mission Statement

Old School Intergenerational Projects connects generations through the arts. Our work helps to maintain wellness, support dementia care, challenge ageism, and offer inclusive opportunities for all.

About This Cause

Old School is a charitable organization, founded by artist educators, Claire Rouleau and Erin Winsor, and based in St. Johns, NL. Old School's purpose is to relieve conditions attributable to being aged, including social isolation and other mental or physical health conditions by providing intergenerational programs that foster interaction between seniors and young people in schools and in the community, such as arts workshops, pen-pals projects, and performances. In addition, Old School strives to advance the public’s appreciation of and accessibility to the arts by providing high-quality artistic performances in public places, senior citizens' homes, churches, community centers, and educational institutions. Programs are designed to support older adults in living a more fulfilled and enriched life and invite young people to engage with their communities and the arts. Each generation benefits greatly from building relationships with one another. Some projects include: The Old School Bus: The bus is an arts programming, administrative, and creative space for Old School, It assists in the transportation of supplies and services and brings opportunities to create to people's doorstep. The bus has been made accessible and is an inclusive, safe space for all people. Creative Communities - traveling around to small communities with the Old School Bus offering a variety of arts programs for all ages to participate and get inspired to create more intergenerational opportunities in their communities. Seven communities were involved this fall; including the City of St. John's. Telephone Tunes: volunteer singers in the community call individual seniors and sing their favourite song and have a chat. Pen Pal Program: Old School facilitates in-class arts programming with students to explore the stereotypes and challenges of aging. Youth and seniors write to each other over a period of 4 months and eventually meet. Music Together: Music Together is an early childhood music and movement program for ages 0-5 years and is held at a long-term care facility where seniors can also participate. Reminiscence program: Experiences, stories, and insights from older community members are passed on to younger generations through weekly sensory explorations with Old School facilitators. This program validates and celebrates the lives of senior participants, improves self-esteem, and offers a unique learning opportunity for elementary social studies classes. Performances - 'By the Sea: A musical, sensory performance for seniors whose mobility, language, or memory prevents them from engaging in traditional theatre events. Future performances are to be announced with funding approval. Skill Sharing: Skill-sharing experiences facilitated by community members young and old with specific areas of expertise to share. In the new year, we are partnering with a national program, GrandPals to start implementing their intergenerational program into the school system.
