About This Cause
The Chilliwack Youth Health Centre (CYHC) is an innovative service model that aims to provide low barrier services and support to our community while also training future service providers. The initial creation of the centre was driven by the need to offer accessible services to youth following a significant increase in mental health struggles among this demographic. Using a "stone soup" model, community agencies within Chilliwack came together to create a youth-friendly service focused on patient-centered care. Starting with just 300 youth services annually, the CYHC has expanded significantly over the years, now delivering over 3,500 services each year. Youth who access services at CYHC are welcomed into a safe space that offers easily accessible services and the connections they need to succeed in their personal growth journeys. The centre employs a bottom-up approach, prioritizing the needs of the youth who walk through our doors. While our primary focus is on providing counselling and medical services, we also offer adjunct services such as transcare support, substance use counselling, and connections to other services addressing the social determinants of health. The CYHC provides a training site for many university students, from programs such as Social Work and Criminology to Counselling and Assessments and more. We provide up-to-date training to our team on intervention and harm reduction techniques, counselling approaches, and additional community support. We collaborate with various organizations to offer wraparound care for our youth. Our team also benefits from a nationally recognized multi-level supervision model, acknowledged by the Health Standards Organization, which facilitates better learning and understanding of comprehensive care. CYHC operates three sites: Chilliwack Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), Stó:lō, and Ch’íyáqtel (Tzeachten). In addition to services at these locations, we also provide outreach programs at other sites to ensure accessible support for youth in our community. We have dedicated teams offering medical and mental health services, including support for health needs and counselling for issues related to anxiety, The CYHC Philosophy of Care is centered on providing low-barrier access through free, drop-in services to ensure youth receive the support they need without unnecessary obstacles. We offer integrated services that combine medical, mental health, substance use, and social care to address diverse needs. With a proactive approach, we emphasize early detection and intervention to identify and address issues before they escalate. Outreach and service navigation are key components, as we guide youth toward appropriate resources and support systems. We also prioritize connecting youth with family doctors to establish ongoing healthcare relationships. Empowering youth is at the heart of our philosophy, involving them in decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard and valued.
