Mission Statement
H2O’s mission is to create and foster connections between young and old generations which serves H2O’s vision to build more united communities and, in turn, an age-friendly, happier, healthier society.
About This Cause
H2O was founded as a result of a life-changing survival journey helped by intergenerational interaction. The founders’ first-hand experience made them realize how influential and essential these interactions are. That realization pointed to them the current progressive generational gap and the need for it to be addressed. H2O created several programs to bridge the generational gap through innovative and fun platforms. The ongoing feedback from the participants has been amazing. Elderly participants felt empowered and appreciated through passing their life stories, insight, and experience down to the younger generation. They also reported feeling engaged and inspired through these connections by being updated on what is new with trends, science, and technology and feeling more belonged and included! Our young participants in the programs reported benefiting from a profound learning experience interacting with the older generation. They became more insightful and inspired in facing life challenges which helped them to make wiser and more informed decisions. The intergenerational connectedness also provided the younger adults with a great deal of confidence and self-worth. These enormously encouraging feedback H2O programs received reassured that these meaningful and constructive connections are invaluable in boosting individuals’ mental and in turn physical health from both generations. The importance of this impact became more evident in these unprecedented times which has been leading to elevated feelings of isolation, loneliness, hopelessness for everyone and especially elder individuals. Our Story A SURVIVAL JOURNEY, profoundly helped by the INTERGENERATIONAL INTERACTION Walking into their 3rd decade of life, the small newly formed family of Amin and Somayeh (Sam) -H2O founders- was hit by an unexpected tornado! Amin had just completed his Doctorate degree and was very excited to start his dream job and settle down with Sam, who had just started her Doctorate program. Both were fuelled with energy and ambition when suddenly the most unimaginable news changed their lives. Amin was diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia that was accompanied with an unusual complication; severe strokes. After months of hospitalization and treatments, their faith, positivity and perseverance started to pay off. Amin eventually defeated the cancer and patiently walked the long path to recovery. Amin’s doctors called him “The Miracle Man” and Sam “Amin’s Angel”! Even though they went through very tough times, the experiences they gained were invaluable and life changing! During Amin’s intensive treatments in the stroke rehabilitation centers, they connected with several seniors also going through treatments. Throughout these meaningful interactions, the idea of Heart Over Heart was born! Seniors were a rich wealth of wisdom and knowledge, filled with traditions, culture, and life experiences. Their profound insights on life inspired Amin and Sam to remain hopeful and overcome their challenges. Throughout this companionship and being genuinely and actively listened to, seniors also felt a great sense of connection, engagement, and empowerment; essentials to mental health and well-being, yet often absent at older ages. Amin and Sam quickly realized how mutually beneficial and constructive these intergenerational interactions could be! They decided to create an organization to bridge the existing gap between young and young at heart! And that was how the organization, H2O Network, all began!
