Mission Statement
Project Rozana is committed to building bridges between Israelis and Palestinians through health, primarily by funding essential projects identified by each community in three sectors: training, treatment and transportation. The health sector is one of the very few areas of civil society where Israelis and Palestinians interact on a daily basis and on such a large scale with mutual respect, trust and care.
About This Cause
Project Rozana was established in 2013 in Australia and is today a multi-faith international organization with affiliates in Canada, the U.S and Israel. It is committed to building bridges between Israelis and Palestinians through health, primarily by funding essential projects identified by each community. The health sector is one of the very few areas of civil society where Israelis and Palestinians meet on such a large scale with mutual respect. Project Rozana builds trust and provides opportunities for Palestinian patients and health care professionals to gain from the expertise, training and treatment available in the Israeli health system. The benefits that flow to current and future generations from both communities are immeasurable. Project Rozana funding is targeted at three main areas: training, transport and treatment. Training: We provide financial support for Palestinian doctors, nurses and therapists to receive advanced training at hospitals in Israel before returning to build the health capacity of their communities. Long-term professional relationships are forged for the benefit of patients from both communities, while also building a basis of trust and understanding between the professionals serving them. Transportation: We have partnered with the highly respected Israeli NGO ‘Road to Recovery’ and support approximately 2000 Israeli volunteer drivers who provide free transport for over 18,000 critically ill Palestinians from checkpoints on the border of Gaza and the West Bank to Israeli hospitals. In the absence of this service, many Palestinians would be unable to afford the high cost of commercial transport, especially those who require ongoing treatment in Israel for complex medical conditions. A sister service operates inside the West Bank and transports patients and their caregivers from their homes to the checkpoints where they transfer to the Israeli drivers. Treatment: We provide funding for mainly Palestinian children to access world-first healthcare in Israel for complex medical procedures that are not available or not readily accessible in their hospitals. We also fund the employment of Patient Navigators - Arabic-speaking professionals who provide psycho-social assistance, interpretation and after-care for Palestinian patients requiring extended stays in Israeli hospitals. The Navigators act as an informed interface between the patient and/or their care givers and the hospital. Responding to an epidemic of diabetes in the Palestinian Territories leading to high rates of renal failure, Project Rozana is training Palestinian health professionals in the provision of peritoneal dialysis in the West Bank. This can be administered at home thereby freeing up hospital beds and allowing patients to better carry on with their work and schooling. Project Rozana has established a Palestinian Medical Advisory Committee with respected medical staff from the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza that consults regularly with their Israeli colleagues. To date, Project Rozana has raised over $1,300,000 towards, inter alia: • The first Bi-national School of Psychotherapy at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem which trains health professionals from the West Bank, Gaza and Israel in how best to treat PTSD among children; • Training Palestinian physicians at Israel’s two largest hospitals – Tel Hashomer-Sheba outside Tel Aviv and Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem; • Addressing particularly challenging medical cases, such as gender re-assignment surgeries for children, where referrals from the Palestinian Authority are not forthcoming due to cultural barriers; • The hiring by Road to Recovery of a full-time professional based in the West Bank to significantly expand the number of Palestinians receiving free transportation services to their hospital appointments in Israel by Palestinian volunteer drivers; • Funding the volunteers of the Acre Arab Women’s Association who provide weekly food and clothing packages to patient care givers at Tel Hashomer-Sheba; • Training Palestinian health professionals in peritoneal dialysis The Board of Project Rozana International (PRINT) recently approved the following new projects for funding for 2020. The projects that we will be supporting are divided in to our three core categories – Transport, Treatment and Training. Transport In response to the progress that has been made to date, the Board has approved an increase in support to our NGO Partner, Green Land Society for Health Development in 2020. Our support for our Israel NGO partner, Road to Recovery, will increase, in accordance with our three year commitment in 2020; and We have approved an allocation to the Jerusalem based NGO – Humans Without Borders (HWB)https://www.humans-without-borders.org/ - a well-regarded organisation with over 100 volunteer drivers who focus primarily on transfers in the Jerusalem area. Project Rozana’s funding will support the “Fun Days” HWB organises for seriously ill Palestinian children and their families. HWB has undertaken 4800 transfers in 2019 from Israeli checkpoints on the West Bank to hospitals in Israel. The three NGO’s that we support have, between them, over 2300 Israeli and Palestinian volunteers providing a total of in excess of 35,000 patient transfers in 2019. The positive impact of our “Wheels of Hope” program is significant and growing. Training (highlights) The EU grant of Euro741,000 (US$850,000) for the Binational School of Psychotherapy (see attached media release) represents 80% of the total budget for the program. The award covers a 40 month period and Project Rozana is committed to funding the 20% balance. We have budgeted the proportion of the Project Rozana commitment that needs to be provided in 2020; The PRINT Board approved an exciting joint proposal from the Alyn Hospital in Jerusalemhttps://www.alyn.org/ and the Jerusalem Princess Basma Center (JPBC) in East Jerusalem (attached). Alyn is Israel’s only pediatric rehabilitation hospital and JPBC operates in the same space on the Palestinian side. The proposal will see staff from JPBC undertake important professional development training at Alyn which will upskill them and enhance their ability to deliver vitally important services to the Palestinian population for disabled children. The CEO’s of both hospitals were introduced to each other in mid-2018 and the proposal as submitted for support “ticks” all our funding criteria; and Approved a proposal to support the training of a cohort of doctors from Gaza with the program partner – Physicians for Human Rights Treatment We will be continuing with our support of the partnership between Assuta Hospital in Ashod and the Augusta Victoria hospital in East Jerusalem. The focus of activity in 2020 will be the expansion of the peritioneal dialysis service for the treatment of patients with early stage renal failure; and We will be continuing with our financial support for the work of Dr Guy Hidas and his colleagues at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem who are doing amazing work with families and children with Disorders of Sex Differentiation We are confident that the programs that have been approved and which will be funded are providing a solid foundation for our Mission of building bridges to better understanding between Israelis and Palestinians through health.
