Mission Statement
The Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation will shine a light on the issues faced by family caregivers. We will nourish a community of care by investing in and engaging with ideas, people and organizations that support care partners and their work in Canada.
About This Cause
The Petro‑Canada CareMakers Foundation™ will create awareness and understanding of the issue of family caregiving in Canada and inspire Canadians to help. We will work to raise funds that can be used to enable and amplify the work of charitable organizations in Canada that currently support family caregivers. We will convene and collaborate with others in the sector to create innovative new programs, resources and tools. Help us support family caregivers today. Your generous contribution allows us to fund resources, support, and programs for caregivers across Canada. Did you know: 25% of Canadians will care for a loved one if their lifetime - taking on the vital role of family caregiver. For the over 8 million Canadians who care for loved ones needing extra support, caring is more than an act of kindness, it's an everyday commitment. The Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation has identified family caregiving as a national priority and has made a long-term commitment to this important social issue. The primary purpose of the foundation is to support caregiving across Canada. Caregiving is an issue that affects all Canadians. One in four Canadians is a caregiver for someone with a long-term health condition, disability or need related to aging at some point in their lives. A family caregiver is anybody, including children and adults, who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or addiction and who could not manage without their support. They care they provide is unpaid. Over 51% of caregivers are overwhelmed. They are often worried, anxious and tired because of caregiving responsibilities. Caregiver stress can lead to multiple negative outcomes including: - Increasing psychological distress, anxiety, depression and burnout - Poor physical health outcomes including an increased risk of mortality - Overall decreased quality of life - Their burden has multiplied with the COVID-19 pandemic - Increased financial burden to the person, family and health care systems. Caregiving continues to evolve into a more complex, demanding and stressful role. An increasing number of care recipients are requiring complex care, with more of this care being delivered at home. Despite having little to no formal training, caregivers are often being tasked with managing complicated medical procedures such as providing wound care and giving injections. More than ever, caregivers are also juggling multiple competing roles: three-quarters of Canadian caregivers are employees, many are also parents raising families of their own, and as many as half provide care to more than one care recipient. Fortunately, caregiver stress can be prevented or reduced with appropriate awareness and interventions. This is where the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation comes in. By providing local and national grants to charitable organizations that support caregivers across the country, your support ensures that family caregivers get the support and interventions they need. Thank you for your support of this important issue that impacts so many.
