Mission Statement
Mission: The purpose of the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre Inc. ( CLLCI) is to provide facilities and resources for a library learning centre to meet the needs of individuals and groups for education, information and personal development including recreation and leisure, and for a learning, creative and cultural place for people of all demographics for meeting and sharing of ideas.
About This Cause
The new Charlottetown Library Learning Centre (CLLC) is envisioned to blend the best of traditional library services with new and innovative technologies, and programming, making it a vital centre for learning and culture in the heart of the community. Given the central location of this facility in the downtown core, the spacious and thoughtful design, the fact that there is no cost to use the CLLC, nor is there any payment required to participate in any of the programs/services, at risk youth, newcomers, families and seniors will find themselves welcome and well-served here. With the improved community outreach that the professional staff expects to provide, and the addition and expansion of innovative programs, these populations will be invited to participate in programs that are meaningful and helpful to them. Expanded programing will help reduce social isolation, and informal guidance and information on how to access services are readily available. Instruction on how to both use technology and how to access information using technology will be of interest to each of these demographics, and in some cases may be life-changing. With increased visitation and enhanced programming, additional resources and funding will be required, especially in the initial two to three years. In a similar vein to school nutrition programs, the professional library staff are looking forward to offering programs to “tweens and teens” in the creative kitchen. The program offering will be generalized to all children so as not to stigmatize a particular group. This is meant to provide children both the skills and knowledge to prepare light meals for themselves if necessary and to provide a snack while attending the program. The two dedicated professional librarians for Children and Teens will allow for the provision of additional services and informal guidance to those who seek it. Increased and variable space will allow for a broader array of programming including the development of various craft skills in the Makerspace using sewing machines, cricut machines, Ozobot kits, a button maker and 3D printers among other state of the art equipment. Another of the major priorities of the new CLLC is enhancing programs related to financial literacy, especially financial literacy for youth. Maker-centered learning helps youth, seniors and adults to gain both hard and soft skills, and to gain creative confidence. These spaces and their associated programs provide those who participate with the opportunity to learn new skills and technologies at no cost. Development of Makerspace skills may also result in a commitment to entrepreneurship as new ideas to create, also create new ideas to market wares Seniors teas will take place at least monthly with the intent to expand their frequency. Coffee, tea and cookies are offered and seniors are invited to come and socialize. This reduces the social isolation that often causes seniors’ depression and anxiety. Speakers are often invited to present on a variety of topics that are of interest to the senior population. An innovative and popular program that is hoped to be expanded is one that provides seniors instruction on how to use their computers and other devices. Youth are recruited to teach computer skills to seniors. Seniors are welcome to bring their own devices or use the Library’s computers. The skills learned through this program allow seniors to become part of the digital world, to narrow the digital divide, to find information on-line, and to stay in touch with loved ones. An expansion of these programs is anticipated in the new CLLC where space and technology exist side by side to enhance the learning experience and to permit the offering of more and varied sessions for a larger number of seniors. As programming is expanded and refined, youth and seniors may be paired to allow youth to further develop their relationship skills and seniors to offer wisdom and friendship, and to learn from a very savvy demographic as far as technology goes. This type of program provides significant long-lasting mutual benefit. This new Learning Centre is able to accommodate at-risk youth who have to do community service hours. They will be able to perform their hours in an objective, non- judgemental environment that offers services that have potential to change their lives for the better. As well, the new CLLC will be offering “Kindle” books to incarcerated youth, building a bond between the youth and the CLLC, and advancing a welcoming environment when the youth is “out”. Youth, adults including seniors and newcomers will find the facility welcoming with technology available to which they may not otherwise have access. The creative lab with sewing machines, cricuts and 3D printers, and the kitchen allow for cultural exchanges of crafts and foods. Meeting rooms will allow newcomers to share with each other and to learn about their new environment. The availability of a variety of spaces will also allow private English language tutoring. The availability of the music rooms also provides opportunities to consider cultural exchanges. They also permit the development of talents that might not otherwise have a chance to flourish. one of the major priorities of the new Facility is financial literacy, especially financial literacy for youth. Programming to enhance literacy; financial, numerical, health, digital and cultural will take place here. From the displays of themed artists, especially those of BIPOC origin, to cultural exchanges in the community kitchen and Makerspace to the provision of sessions dealing specifically with aspects of financial literacy, health literacy, legal literacy and/or digital literacy, Islanders across the province will have the opportunity to upskill and reskill as they participate in these programs. One of the major priorities of the new CLLC is enhancing programs related to financial literacy, especially financial literacy for youth. The Library has partnered with the Chartered Professional Accountants of PEI Board to organize seminars on this issue and to provide skilled volunteers to assist with tax preparation in the spring. The CLLC will benefit both the residents of the city of Charlottetown and the province of PEI, through its mandate as the provincial library and its ability to share programming virtually. All are welcome here. There are opportunities to socialize, seek information, learn new skills, develop friendships, learn how to access services and to improve the quality of one’s life. Very few places offer this scope of opportunity. In closing, the Facility will be a major asset to the City of Charlottetown and the Province.
