Mission Statement

Hackergal’s mission is to inspire Canadian girls* to code, create and become the technology leaders of tomorrow by ensuring they have the education, community and confidence to succeed in STEM. With women vastly underrepresented in the technology industry globally, Hackergal strives to close Canada’s gender gap in technology.

About This Cause

Despite making up half of the Canadian workforce, women constitute only 23% of STEM workers, a 2% increase in 30 years. Less than 5% of STEM workers in Canada are BIPOC women. The impact of harmful gender stereotypes takes root early in a girl's life, sowing seeds of doubt about their capabilities and their place in the world of STEM. Hackergal is here to change that. Hackergal has three core program pillars that support our mission: Hackergal’s Hackathon provides over 55 hours of digital skills education to middle school girls across Canada. The year-round program culminates in a week-long Hackathon event in which learners code a project focused on creating social impact. Hackergal’s National Ambassador program supports high school girls who are passionate about pursuing post-secondary education and future careers in technology by offering ongoing mentorship, workshops and networking opportunities with industry leaders. Hackergal Hub is a free online learning portal that engages learners and facilitators through multimedia self-paced lessons. With over 60 hours of comprehensive course content available in both English and French, girls can learn coding and digital skills at their own pace. Hackergal Hub is used across all Hackergal programming, including the Hackergal Hackathon, coding workshops and the Hackergal Ambassador program. Across all of our programming pillars, Hackergal prioritizes bridging the digital literacy gap among marginalized girls in Canada and within the technology sector, with a particular focus on those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC). We incorporate diverse role models from across Canada’s technology sector into all of our programming, offering mentorship and networking opportunities for girls who seldom see people who look like them thriving in technology. Since 2015, Hackergal has taught over 26,000 girls to code across Canada while also building the education sector’s capacity to empower youth with digital skills. Through our “teach the teacher” model, Hackergal has taught over 1,700 facilitators and educators how to bring computer science and digital skills education into their classrooms and has guided over 700 partner schools and organizations through capacity-building Hackergal programming within their communities.
