Mission Statement
Hackergal is a national organization dedicated exclusively to inspiring girls to code, create, and envision themselves as future technology leaders. Our mission is to close the gender gap in technology by engaging girls in STEM before societal stereotypes cause them to question their abilities and potential within this field.
About This Cause
Women make up half of Canada’s workforce, yet only 23% of STEM roles are held by women, a number that has risen by just 2% in the past 30 years. The representation of women from marginalized communities is even more stark, with less than 5% of STEM positions held by BIPOC women. Persistent barriers, harmful stereotypes, and systemic inequities continue to deter girls and women from pursuing opportunities in the male-dominated tech sector. At Hackergal, we are on a mission to change this. We know that early exposure to STEM is essential for challenging stereotypes, building confidence, and fostering girls’ natural curiosity about technology. By providing free, accessible coding and STEM education, Hackergal equips middle and high school girls across Canada with the tools and support to see themselves as leaders in the digital economy. Hackergal’s three key programs ensure girls from all backgrounds have access to education, mentorship, and a strong community: - The Hackergal National Hackathon: A year-long coding initiative for middle school girls, culminating in Canada’s largest all-girl hackathon. - The Hackergal Ambassador Program: A high school program that extends STEM exposure through mentorship, internships, and scholarships. - The Hackergal Hub: A free online portal offering interactive computer science education for girls and educators across Canada. Hackergal’s programs go beyond coding; they inspire confidence, curiosity, and a sense of possibility.
