Mission Statement
Canvas provides empathy-based education on consent and 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion.
About This Cause
Based in Toronto, Canada, Canvas is a registered charity that provides education on consent and 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion. Canvas has built an amazing team of artists and educators that run workshops for approximately 10,000 youth, teachers, and caregivers each year, in schools, camps and community spaces. Our programs create spaces where all people are free to live authentically and have the tools to create safe and caring relationships. Proactive, empathy-based education is key to combatting and ultimately ending homophobia, transphobia, and sexual violence. With the increase of homophobia and transphobia across Canada, more organizations and schools are reaching out to create safer spaces. We are seeing alarming rates of discrimination in classrooms, along with more queer and trans youth being openly out. With your help, we will increase our capacity and make our essential education accessible to everyone. Canvas’ programs include: (1) Speak OUT, a transformative workshop aiming to make schools safer and more inclusive for 2SLGBTQ+ students. Students and teachers learn about 2SLGBTQ+ identities, how to be an ally, and ways to challenge homophobic and transphobic bullying. (2) Consent Kit, a powerful, interactive workshop series that offers evidence-informed, culturally-sensitive and trauma-informed consent education for students and teachers, with a goal of mitigating youth dating violence and its impacts and supporting survivors of violence. (3) Back Talk, a multi-week spoken word poetry program for underserved and street-involved youth designed to challenge sexual violence and inspire resilience. (4) Youth Arts Action Community (YAAC), a weekly program to foster safer space for peer-support, exploration of identity, and community-building for queer, trans and gender-diverse youth in schools across the GTA. ' (5) RelateAbility - A 12 week programs for adults with autism to build community and expand their understanding of sexual health, consent, boundaries and sexual and gender identities. In each program, we see participants’ self-confidence grow alongside their artistic skills, as they build community with peers, gain new understandings, and express voice and identity: “I feel that I have grown as a writer and as an individual. I feel comfortable speaking up for women and speaking against violence against women.” - Back Talk participant
